The Wall
My wife, Denise, wrote a poem based on real elements of my life. We then collaborated to produce this...
I am repulsed by my visage
The child inside is strange
I hide the shame and pain I feel
Behind the mask I wear
On the day I hit the wall
Can I afford to lose it all?
I hated the role I was forced to play
I hated the daily chores
I needed to be with Mom today
Instead I am all alone
On the day I hit the wall
Can I afford to lose it all?
At two the little girl wanted to play
At four I had to hide her away
At six I wanted to set her free
I know my heart's desire
I know my heart's despair
My Wife and Kids, My kith and kin,
The parents I held dear
They never heard my painful cries
Nor met the me inside
On the day I hit the wall
Can I afford to lose it all?
So on the day I hit the wall
My pretend life was over
There was no more path forward
I had to change or die
On the day I hit the wall
Can I afford to lose it all?
Now, I'm the me I was meant to be
It can be that way for you!
And someday to let your inner self free
And let your true self to be you.
On the day you hit the wall
Can you afford to lose it all?
