no cutlery of any kind. Not even any dishware. All I've got is an empty can of cat food, metaphorically. Now, not only am I cold all the time, I have a bloody cold. If I lay down, I have a hard time breathing - I have asthma - so I can't sleep very well. I can't wait for winter to be over. Shoot me now.

Sending you love!
I’m on the downside of a cold too. Fortunately I do not have asthma.

If you have a recliner
When I'm having trouble sleeping, I wrap up nice and warm in a fuzzy robe (dressing gown for you folks across the pond) and sleep in my recliner about half reclined. I have a small throw pillow that I wedge between my chin and the top of the robe to keep my mouth from falling open.
When upper respiratory problems are present, it's easier to sleep half reclined.

If you are under about age 60, try diphenhydramine (USA: DayQuil or clones) It's also sold to act against seasickness. It's a anti-histamine (I think); that may help with being clogged up. If it's contra-indicated for you, talk to pharmacist.

Please, everyone, please disregard that last request from Holly!!
I am in a similar situation to yours regarding cutlery. I have become overwhelmed by some “official” demands that are impossible to fulfill because the government has changed some procedures to make the public's experience faster and more efficient. But other government agencies are almost 30 years out of date with demanding evidence from procedures that have been obsolete for more than 20 years. This pressure is triggering a paralysis that is further exasperated by autistic burnout and chronic depression.
Though I am not suffering from asthma, I have a lot respiratory symptoms similar to asthma. I have found that herbal tea with eucalyptus to be beneficial to clear respiratory tract. Admittedly the taste of eucalyptus tends to be on the disagreeable end of spectrum, so it helps to add other herbs and fruits to improve the taste. But the steam from eucalyptus tea tends to free up the nose and respiratory tract. A Mentholatum cream around the nose can also be helpful.
Sleeping with the torso at an 45 degree angle (semi reclined) instead of full flat is often necessary when suffering from blockage of the respirator tract. If you have a recliner that is a good place to sleep. And it tends to be more comfortable than a pile of pillows against the headboard, because you just slip down the mattress.
To keep warm I hate to use a duvet, because it is either too hot or not warm enough for me. I much prefer to layer several thin blankets. By using layers I can much better regulate the insulation factor to the ambient temperature and my personal comfort.
Some like to use wool fabrics to keep warm. But I prefer cotton flannel garments, since they are more comfortable for my hypersensitive skin. I love a nice floor length and loose cotton flannel long sleeve sleeping gown, cotton flannel sheets on my bed (both below and above my body), and two thin microfiber thermal blankets to be cozy. But if it gets colder I will add more microfiber blankets on top as necessary.
Okey-fine sending shots your way!
Di you prefer Cinnamon Schnapps, or Peppermint Schnapps? :D
On to the real message: I have found that the type of 'cold" prescribes the treatment. Right now, I'm fighting some nasty sinus bug that keeps trying to get into my chest. Treating with ibuprofen (headache), Sudafed (pseudoephedrine, not phenylephrine!) for nasal decongestion, Mucinex (guaifenesin) for stopping mucus congestion in the chest, and/or, finally, we have dextromethorphan as an anti-tussive (reduces/stops coughing) . Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is an antihistamine for allergies and not really for colds and the like, but but does help reduce the mucus from allergies sometimes.
All that said, best pf luck and get healthy (ier)!
Hugs 'n Love,
