There are several choices for a backup for all our hard efforts at writing. The hundreds of hours gone when a computer or only the HD crashes are hours one can't replace. Floppies and then disks, and now jump drives but if a computer gets corrupted even if it's an MS update. It happened and it wanted to rewrite all my files. It's been months since I removed my jump drive not letting it get close to the computer as I looked for my Win 10 disk to reinstall a fresh un updated win. Blocked Edge and Win updates from touching my computer again but the damage had been done.

There are a lot of basic refurbished, computers and laptops on the market. Keep in mind they are basic and what they are loaded with varies widely. Some are as inexpensive as buying a jump drive. What they won't have is a DVD drive. Keep in mind basic and keep it away from the net. What picked my interest are the ones starting at forty nine dollars. I'll order one in the next few days for a stand alone computer, load it with Win XP, MS Word 95 MS Publisher, and all my attempts at writing for the past X amount of years. I'll have to retrieve stories from floppies. Yes I have a computer still able to read floppies. Going to be interesting getting that computer to talk to a newer one when it doesn't have USB ports or Blue Tooth, or WiFi. What an ancient computer. Hope the internal battery is still good so it will boot.

If you care to take a whirl on a computer rather than another jump drive, they are everywhere. Basic means it won't be fast. Amazon, Walmart, etc. but be careful and make sure it comes with a charger. The charger could end up costing more than the computer if it's not included.

Not Enough Research on Specs

MS can't be installed on this machine. It may work with MS on a Cloud Apps system.
Means it would need to be tied to the net. I'll keep digging for a budget machine as I'm going back to MS XP for OS.
Several of this brand stated they do come with charger.
My apologies to all who wasted time looking.

That jump drive you are queasy about ...

Ask your local library or community college what they do to their public computers between users.

The right answer should be overwrite (not merely flipping the 'delete/erase bit) all user files and install a fresh copy of the operating operating system.

This means you can't hurt them.

Then copy your desired files to a new USB/USB hard drive (or USB solid-state drive).

You may need to take your files down to ASCII/plain text (XYZ.txt) to be sure they are clean.

Sorry, this last will lose all formatting, e.g. bold, fancy separator bars, and probably 'left' and 'right' quotation marks.

Hope this helps.
