Hi girls and boys and others. Last weekend, the UK August bank holiday, I made what has become a pilgrimage to Shrewsbury to attend the 2023 folk festival. Drove overnight to arrive early and get a better choice of camping spot.
The folk festival name might conjure an image of an old gent wailing some ancient lament over the strains of a squeezebox, but "folk" is more than that as many will know, and Shrewsbury spreads a very broad table of entertainment and pastimes. This year one could join a dulcimer workshop, sit in the beertent enjoying on of many brews and watching someone flatfooting to live Appalachian beats, go watch live gigs at 3 stages afternoon and evenings, learn clog and ceilidh and that's just a fraction of it. You might have heard of Billy Bragg? Capercaillie? I was hopping at the front to the Red Hot Chili Pipers - yeah, not a typo.
Anyways, why post it here? Well, someone who might come across as oddly gendered wouldn't raise an eyebrow there. Maybe a smile though, attendees are a lovely bunch. There was a female married couple in the tent behind mine and the first afternoon gig I watched was O'Hooley and Tidow, known locally for the theme to "Gentleman Jack" on tv.
Dress code? There isn't one, unless it's "start at hippie then go for it". Seriously, the morris teams wander the site in costume: Goth Morris? There are beards and floaty skirts and I haven't seen the two combined yet, but it wouldn't surprise me.
I hope one or two of you will go next year, tickets are on sale online (bought mine!) and we could meet, or not, up to you.
There are 2022 videos still up on Youtube, 2023 will be up, and here's a taster: Shrewsbury 23 Check a few of them.

And the bands played on...
I had heard that Steve Knightly, Eddie Reader and Maddy Prior had all played too?
To paraphrase another song, icons of an era ...
I might well be persuaded to attend next year. If only Dougie McLean would play....btw we have seen the Red Hot Chilli Pipers. Fantastic!!

Performers
Yup Steve Knightly a regular, here this year and also narrated for Reg Meuross. Show of Hands (Steve+ Phil Beer) have attended in the past. Maddy was here with her daughter, and did a vocal workshop, which is her day job. Steeley Span performed a few years ago! Yes Eddi Reader this year. Novelty? Joachim Cooder (yep, son of Ry) doing blues Take This Hammer playing electric m'bira. Somehow it worked....
Last year favourites? Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, Skerryvore, Judy Collins.
Edit: and just in case you think the whole thing might be "serious", these guys were there Doonicans and hilarious.

Skerryvore...
A dear friend if mine from Scotland got us into Skerryvore, and (especially The Seventh Wave) their music is rarely far from our music systems.
As for taking things too seriously, well, the Red Hot Chilli Pipers always make me laugh ( and sing and dance!).
I'm sold, we are looking at tickets for next year...

This side of the pond
Has many folk festivals fro coast to coast. My partner and I spent yesterday at Thumbfest in our little village of Lexington, Michigan. Only one day from 10:00 til 10:00 pm. Ten stages spread around easily walked or take a shuttle bus if challenged by the hill up from the harbor. Sponsored by The Bluewater Folk Society and a lot of businesses it is FREE w/free parking and shuttles. Workshops, jams ,and kiddy tents too. Food trucks, restaurants, bars, and winery/brewery are a plenty. All forms of acoustic music available from Appalachian to zydeca. Quite a conglomeration.
And today we rest and practice until next year.

I don't mind
a bit of 'folk' but i'm afraid a whole weekend of it would have me running around screaming!
Mind you, i quite like the concept of Goth Morris!
Glad you had a good weekend, you know our floor is always open.

2024! Shrewsbury FF revisited
Back again - and primed to hover over the keyboard on Friday, when next year's tickets go on sale.
Can you have too much music? Well, at times it seems I want to be in two or more places at once to see everything.
Anyway, once the Thursday/Friday stormy weather had calmed down I came to decision time. Should I abandon the jeans? The new skirts and top weren't saying anything, left it all to me, the meanies. Morning shower scraped surface hair off me, then I stepped into the green maxi skirt, tied off the neck of a ruddy flower pattern top and popped, feeling distinctly unsettled, out of the tent. Wow.
No going back. The rest of the weekend was spent thus arrayed. Walking the big site, food, shows, beer, the beginners' ukulele workshop and show. Bracelets and rings I already had and a marcasite necklace I got at a village sale yonks ago. Hat because of my less than perfect hair - but hats were common, indoors as well and in some festival variety too.
Bought Fuffle bars and a pendant from Popaeg, resisted all the colourful clothing on offer this time, will be combing the sale racks again when I shop locally. All the stories about fabric wafting over smooth legs are 100% true....
Some familiar faces and new, at stalls and bars and shows. Bring yours along next year and say hi?
JJ.
