Why are readers so mean in giving kudos? I'm not talking about comments, which actually require engagement and effort, but those little things which need just a push of a button. Even excellent stories like Jenny Walker's.
What's so hard about letting an author know you appreciated the effort they put into entertaining you?

i dont leave kudos if i dont like the story and i dont comment. The reason i dont comment is simply we have hard enough rl why cause more by leaving a negative comment

Had a few...
Any amateur writing site will gather a wide range of abilities and experience, Writing is both an art and a craft, 'craft' being something that can be passed on. I have read stories here that leave me embarrassed that I lay any claim to be in any way comparable, others that embarrass me vicariously with their failings. What I try not to do is leave a negative comment, for, as others have said, sticking your pen above the parapet is somewhat terrifying.
My preferred response, if I feel it helps, is to send a positive (ish) message with some suggestions, phrased variously as "I find this works for me" or "So and so uses this approach--what do you think?'. I always try to start with a compliment.
The craft can be passed on. Writers are delicate blooms at times, so let's nurture them.
As has been done for me...
I've commented directly to just the author if I really enjoy a story or their one I follow to says something like, "Did you mean for this to be 'as she had once gone' or 'as she had once been'?" Explain I saw it and thought maybe it was an 'oops!' or that I didn't understand it as written. I'll explain its happened so many times in my own stories - getting someone looking out for me to fix an error I didn't catch.

Yes, you can push the kudos button when not logged in and you'll see the kudos counter ticked up one step. Then you update the page or leave the page and lo and behold, the counter reverts to the state before, cleansing the "unathorised" kudos click.

Well, it definitely gives me a different perspective on the whole hits-to-kudos debate. If people who don’t have accounts can’t give kudos — but do register as “hits” when they read a story — then hits and kudos are simply measuring different audiences. I don’t know what the ratio of “guests” to “members” is; I don’t even know if Erin has that data. But it’s a ratio you would absolutely need to know before drawing any conclusions about a “hits-to-kudos” ratio.
