although I have no illusions of winning said contest, it was still a step in the right direction for me. Maybe someday I will learn to be a real writer and have a chance at one.

Or, "a journey of 10,000 miles starts with a single step". I'm not suggesting you have 10,000 miles to go! I've read your story and, honestly, it's pretty good.

Now you've been bitten by the bug, enter another one. I promise you, it gets easier.

Oh, the world can be so frightful,

But BC is so delightful!
My soul needs a story, so . . .
Let it Snow, let it Snow, let it Snow!

I’m so glad you joined the party, Holly!

I started out

... on here as an experiment. It sort of took off.

My first book, 'Something to Declare', is an example of what happens as you continue to write. I look back at what I came out with, and then compare it with my later stuff, and see how things developed. I could rewrite the first part of StD, bring it in line with my later methods/technique, but I simply don't want to. It is part of my life.

Many people have said this; it certainly isn't original from me. The best way to learn how to write is simply to do so. find your own voice. Find your own ways of building, and resolving, necessary tension. See how others do it, and while not exactly following Tom Lehrer's advice*, learn from others. Never be ashamed of that.

* In one word he told me secret of success in mathematics:
Plagiarize
Plagiarize
Let no one else's work evade your eyes
Remember why the good Lord made your eyes
So don't shade your eyes
But plagiarize, plagiarize, plagiarize
Only be sure always to call it please 'research'
