Norton
I was told 20 years ago that Norton, which markets anti-virus, and anti-malware software, qualified as the largest virus around, due to it being so invasive of your boxen, and your info that you deal with on a daily basis.I can only imagine it has gotten worse since back then.

Those awful pop ups
I am reasonably happy that my PC works the way I want it. As I am a cautious girl, I do have anti virus software, and a pop up blocker. Which are the most invasive pop ups? Norton, of course, trying to sell me add ons that I really don't want. Oh and watch out that their renewal cost is ridiculous, so just cancelling and reinstalling saves a fortune. Pah!

I ditched norton
In the early years, I was a huge Norton fan. Not only was the anti virus software great, I had two floppies full of tools that Norton developed for troubleshooting both AT and XT IBM clones. Powerful stuff. But then (a bit more than 20 years ago), Norton decided that they needed to make using the computer fool proof. Well as the axiom goes... when you make something fool proof, you end up with only fools using it.
At that point, it became seriously invasive. There wasn't a thing you could do on the computer that it didn't stick its finger into to make it "better" or "safer". I ditched it in favor of Avast!. The free version of Avast!, once I installed it, took about three days running in the background showing me popups of things it found that Norton had missed. My son-in-law turned me on to it. He told me that he had a similar experience when he replace McAfee .

I could have written this story.
Decades ago I also used Norton. It was awesome. Until it wasn't. Eventually I wound up with Avast free. And I haven't had virus or trogon on my computer in many, many years despite visiting the numerous dangerous web sites I visit.
Alas, I've been at my parents house for the past few months closing up their estate. My Mum's computer has both Norton and McAfee on it. And I'm afraid to change this until I wrap things up and go home because I am dependent on this computer to handle all of the estate documents and if something goes wrong I don't have the backup facilities or resources to fix it.

sorry, you are mistaken that you do not have any trojan downloaders installed. EVERY automatic updater that does not require user input to download and install software is the legal definition of a trojan downloader.
