This is completely off the grid as far as story telling or maybe not. Might generate some insight into how and what others think when writing their story and helping their hero or heroine. Normally when I go out in public I wear a hat for two reasons. Cowgirl hat to accent what I'm wearing or a ball cap with a badge emblem on the front. Hold over from a company we ran. The cap is to keep my hair out of my face and my mouth. Oklahoma wind remember? I seem to always be eating hair when I don't have a hat. Truth be known it's thin on top. Old age isn't for vain people.
I was asked to perform at a function where either hat is not an option. Conservative black skirt, white blouse, black flats, studs for earrings, no necklace, no finger rings, no makeup, peach colored lipstick. The idea is to be seen and not remembered thirty minutes after everyone has gone home. My hair is silver white, wavy, curly past my shoulder blades. Hunting for a wig that matched my own has been an effort in futility. Called nine different wig shops in OKC and no luck. Reason I'm searching for a shop is I ordered one wig about a year ago and then another six months ago. The style is wrong and color is wrong. What can one tell when looking at a picture?
Tanna is in the business where she meets and talks to a LOT of people. Stopped in and asked her last week about where women go for a wig. She looked at me and shook her head. "You have the prettiest natural hair I've ever seen. Why do you want to hide it?"
Not true, I've seen a lot of women with beautiful hair. My jealousy meter over loads. Don't know if I managed the evil smirk but I tried. "Disguise. I plan on knocking off a bank.
She didn't look like she bought it so I came clean. "Don't want to hide it, only accent it. I want to match as I seem to be in more uptown meetings where a hat isn't acceptable. I have four wigs and they no longer match. My hair has changed from golden blonde to dishwater blonde, to silver white, what you see now."
Here's where I'm open to suggestions ladies and gentlemen. I've explained my situation. If anyone has any ideas beside mail order, how about a hint? I can't believe I'm the only one who has run into this problem. I know a lot of women hide their own hair up under a wig. I'm not going there. One would think with all my years of experience I would be the one passing out advice. Hah, not happening.

Another solution
I have hair down to my bra strap. Like yours, it's thin on top. No real bald spot, but thin enough to notice. What I do is brush the sides and front together at the crown of my head and then put a nondescript barrette to hold it there. My hair used to be ash blonde, now it's kind salt and pepper (if the pepper was light brown), so the barrette that I use is a light brown plastic thing. You could do the same thing with some of those snap hair clips. Like these

Excellent Suggestion
Hugs Patty, I've used a hair clip to hold a certain style but my life usually means a part down the middle, brush it out after washing it. It likes it's own style for whatever reason. Sometimes it's Shirley Temple with tight curls, other times it's wavy with a few curls tossed in at the ends. Has a lot to do with the conditioner I use and the moisture in the air.

Dye Your Hair
Instead of trying to find a wig to match, why don't you dye your hair to match the wig?

Hugs Joanne, I've never dyed my hair in my whole life. What one sees is what one gets. Have nothing against women dyeing their hair. One of the ladies at the farm store has blue hair for several years now. I call her Miss Smerf. What she calls me is.... She's a great friend anyway. Someone mentioned wigs may be dyed to match. Now that I might go for.
Appreciate the suggestion as it might be a future option.

Get a custom made wig
You can get a wig custom made with the hair colour, length, waviness/curliness that you want, custom made to fit your exact head dimensions. The only limiting factor is money. Obviously custom made is going to be more expensive than mass produced.
I have no idea how to go about doing this or if you can get what you want at a price you can afford, but it is possible. So, start with a Google search.
Ballpark Prices
Lindsay, I'm not going to claim I know that much about custom wigs. The prices start around eight hundred dollars and even go as high as three thousand or more. My vanity doesn't cover that kind of cost. Nor do I plan on wearing one often enough to justify much more than a hundred dollars, max. Special functions once a year where suit and tie, cocktail dresses, evening gowns, are the norm.
Something I try and avoid like the plague. I love wearing a beautiful dress, hate socializing. I'd rather be kissing a cow or hugging a goat. The problem arose because I'm getting really damn old and hair is thinning the past few years..

Another idea I had
Look at the wigs that you do have, the ones that are not quite right. Select the best of them, and look for a manufacturer's tag.
If you can find a tag, go on the internet and send an email to the company, asking for the address of any retail stores near you that sell that brand of wig. You could also look at their web site for something that might meet your requirements.
