It's an old one
And I suspect the dormouse was placed on the flower, probably after being torpid and it's probably yawning rather than laughing, dormice don't laugh. So it's a fake, sadly the judges who gave him a prize know little if anything about dormice.

The article did say that it couldn't be said that it was laughing, but could rather be yawning, but it looked like it was laughing.

Darn, one would have hoped...
Not nice it that is true. But from looking at that photo, yes, it looks more like yawning to me too, even though very adorable yawning. You are the dormouse expert. It is similar with with sharks and other sea life unfortunately. On the other hand, cute or beautiful pictures get more people engaged, how normally wouldn't think about looking into wild life issues.
