Trying to Remember a Story...

Recalled an incident from a story this morning but couldn't remember where it was from.

Our protagonist, a classic nerd, is going to a dance or on a date en femme, and s/he creates a pair of earrings from computer chips.

Sounds like Tuck, but I have a feeling that it isn't. Anybody remember?

However, when I looked at the home page the random solo was

and just below, as the first blog entry this

"I'm trying to remember a story ..."

I would have trusted Ernie/Tina Wilson from Wendy-J's 'Midnight Downloads' to pull something similar though, but after scanning up to part 36, she hasn't.
