I'd never heard of Torrey Peters before but apparently this is her second trans novel and judging by a blurb I found on her, she is probably trans herself, though obviously transitioned young if she is. Anyway, the reviewer in the Guardian seemed to enjoy it, though not sure it's my cup of tea.

Review

Reading the review, it does an excellent job of deterring me from going anywhere near the book. The (currently horribly transphobic) satirical magazine Private Eye has an entire section devoted to this sort of thing, called Pseud's Corner.

The novel may be more engaging than the review, of course.

Backward Americans

For some reason, American Copyright regulations do not allow me to view this through the Guardian.

On the other hand...

I was able to read the Guardian article from my home in California. Perhaps copyright restrictions are not your problem?

Ditto Here...

I've never had any trouble following links, here and in email newsletters, to the Guardian.

Third Story

Daphne Xu's picture

It's her third story, at least on Amazon. They're all about young trans-ladies.

The two earlier titles, "Infect" and "The Masker", hit me before I found that they were written long before CoV19.

The synopsis of this third book raises an interesting question: can a detrans-male get someone pregnant?

She seems to live in Brooklyn, NY presently.

She has the usual exhibitionistic photos. Her face seems perfectly feminine. I agree that if she transitioned MtF, it must have been quite young. According to her Wiki, she is well educated. I wish her the best.

Almost 'mainstream' TG fiction ...

... are the Jessica Frame crime novels by P R Ellis. They're available on Amazon Kindle. They concern a former (male) police officer who was married but is no transitioning and acting as a private detective but gets involved with her former colleagues. The stories are based in the UK. I'm just reading my second one. They're helping get me through our 3rd lock-down without being too stressful.

Worth a look, I think. Like Angharad, I'm not sure the Torrey Peters one is my cup of tea (although, even being English, I don't drink it :) )

There are two novellas and four stories, written IIRC after the first novel but telling the protagonist's way becoming Jasmine, as prequels to the series.

I just finished reading the fifth and last novel in the series. They are great, both as detective novels and also in telling the problems of a woman transitioning.

Very much recommend for anybody who loves murder mysteries.
