Audio Recording

Back in the dark ages did some voice recording. We won't call it singing. Almost three months ago I lost my voice, my lung capacity, my taste, smell was off too. FYI read where a lady had three tests for the covid and all negative but she knew she had it. Finally her doc agreed even with negative tests. After starting treatment the test came back positive. I only had two negative tests and no medical help getting over it besides home monitoring by my doc. Over two weeks of running an elevated fever, lack of lung capacity, and I finally passed the hump.

Would appreciate info for a decent setup for recording. Nothing fancy or high end, mike, sound card, software program. Maybe my hearing is gone so what I think I have, I don't. Just maybe for the first time in five months I have my voice back easily hitting some notes I pushed to reach before. Don't have any cows to sing to like I did growing up. Wonder if goats appreciate singing? Hope they don't expect me to yodel.
Stay tuned. How's that for a pun?

Life is meant to be lived not worn until it's worn out. Is your glass half full or half empty? Are you counting all your blessings or wallowing in all your sorrows? Are you thinking of all the bad things that could happen or thinking of how to make each day better? I cried my eyes out at my BFF funeral Wed. Feeling sorry and cheated because she won't be there for me. Those feelings are for myself not her. I'll see her soon along with all my friends, including the four legged ones. We are allowed to have the "self pity party" just don't dwell in it or let it drag us down too long.

If you're not looking to go pro, sound cards are a no-go now.

Not that they don't still EXIST... but they're not considered a necessary part of the production line for a home studio nowadays for the most part since the on-board audio capabilities of (most) computers are good enough now that software accounts for more than that extra bit of hardware. You're better off investing the 50 bucks or so in a USB-based audio interface for connecting mics and other audio equipment to your system.

As for mics, there are a LOT of options depending on what kind of sound you want to get. I would suggest figuring out what recording obstacles you're going to need to overcome before delving into mics too much though, since there's a big difference between a clinical-sounding mic used for recording in a sound booth with the intent to do a lot of post-processing on the audio, and a mic with a warmer resonance but that's more forgiving of ambient sounds around you, etc. Knowing what you'll have to account for and what you want in the end spells the difference between, say, a 60 dollar Blue Yeti USB mic, or an 80 dollar Audio Technica (or better) mic with the aforementioned interface, etc.

Regardless of what you pick up... good luck, and have fun!

Thank you, that's food for thought

Melanie, I'm guessing you assumed I had a decent computer with a decent MB and hardware? Actually I don't. I didn't build this puppy and terribly disappointed in Del Mfg. even if they did possibly assemble it in OKC. Between MS and Del I would rate it as a dog. Enough about what I don't have. I'll delve into your suggestions and see what I can cobble together without breaking the bank. Your est. dollar figures are well within the budget since I'm not building a sound booth. Until I hit playback I'll never know whether the input will be output in the cornfield or possibly used to drive the rats out of the barn?

Watch the Budget

In my search I found Melanie started me off down the rabbit hole. Lots of data and equipment out there that wasn't ten years ago. Even mid level recording can cost as much as ten thousand. Staying on the bottom end, decent equipment will cost between five hundred to a thousand.
In all that I found this little jewel for Youtubers who post their fifteen minutes of fame. It uses mostly what one already has, iPhone, computer, etc. and it's darn inexpensive.
