Is there a difference in perception between a blond haired female and a blond haired male?!?!? Why?!?!?

What is the male equivalent of a "valley girl"?!?!?

What is the male equivalent of a "slut"?!?!?

What is the female equivalent of a "gigolo"?!?!?

Blond is actually spelled with an ;E' on the end, isn't it?!?!?

Blond v. blonde

One definition I have seen is that blond is an adjective describing the hair color while blonde is a noun for a blond-haired person, usually a female.

A female gigolo might be a courtesan, though they aren't exactly the same.

"According to the Wikipedia article on slut, "Similar terms used for men are cad, rake, male slut, man whore, himbo, womanizer, stud, and player."

I don't think there is a male equivalent to Valley girl, though there probably should be one.

I'd say the closest male equivalent to a Valley Girl is a Surfer Dude.

Um, there were boys living in San Fernando Valley in the 80's

And as products of the culture in that locale and era they shared many of the traits that Frank and Moon Zappa found so pathetic in the Valley's female youth when they created that song. So why not Valley Boys, Valley Dudes, or the non-gender-specific local term "Vals"?

And anyway I'm pretty sure the song that put Valley Girls on the cultural radar was really just another of the misanthropic musical genius's indictments of American stupidity, vacuity, selfishness and self absorbtion in general; so it's laughable to single out valley residents as if the rest of us have any redeeming virtues that would give us a pass. And aside from his creative talents + musical innovations the incredibly hateful + judgmental Mr. Zappa was no prize either, come to think of it. It might have served him well to remember the old adage: "If you meet three assholes in a row go home and look in the mirror."

Valley Girl = Surfer Dude.

According to Merriam-Webster

Patricia Marie Allen's picture

If your talking about a man, he's a blond, if it's a woman, she's a blonde

A male slut would be a philanderer.

Male Valley Girl is a Valley Guy.

A female gigolo would be kept woman.

Blond/Blonde

Patricia's dictionary definition (blonds are male, blondes are female) is what I learned, and use. That extends to the adjective form; males have blond hair while females have blonde hair. Other uses (wine, furniture, etc.) are generally in the "e" form, from what I've seen; I've always considered it the default.

Actually -- I almost used it in the paragraph above -- men have blond hair while women have blonde tresses. Like a male lion, a long-haired male may have a blond mane. But I've seldom if ever seen tresses used for males.

The blond/blonde distinction doesn't seem to be honored as frequently now as it was when early boomers like Patricia and me were growing up.

(I've seen Valley boys used, though not very often. But surfer dudes can be and, I think, often is used to project the same connotations as Valley girls. Capital-V vs lower case is another issue. Since the reference is to a specific valley -- the San Fernando one -- I use a capital V, but I can't really say how many people do that, especially this long -- 38 years -- after the Zappa song that coined the term came out.

I once sardonically used the term "gag me -- spoon optional" in an email to a guy born a week before I was in 1950 -- with the same interest in pop music -- and he had no idea what I was talking about. Not sure whether that's surprising or not...)

I Learned

The same male/female spelling difference when I was in school. However I had an occasion to Google it awhile back and whichever site it was had an additional note that the "e" was being dropped more and more in favor of using "blond" for both males and females. If we can use "blond" for women I suppose we can also use "hair" in place of "tresses".

Men, women and hair

Men and hair are blond. Women can be blonde, or blond if you're into that kind of neo-grammar. Blonde hair is a mistake but very, very common.

Doh!

I have no formal training on which to base an opinion, other than what I was taught in English classes when I was in school and what I've read online. That has allowed me to form an opinion, right or wrong. My personal opinion may not match your knowledge, but honestly I really don't care.

Blonde hair is non-standard, but common. :)

One particular word always seems to jump off the page for me; especially in light of its frequent use in our genre. Either by 'choice' or a part of some plot seeking revenge or justice, a young man is turned into or forced to become a 'slut.' Or in many cases, the character is now a 'cumslut'; a descriptor perhaps more frequently employed on some other sites. And we likely all can recall our teens featuring the 'school slut?'

But in the real world, things are a bit more three dimensional. As much as the reader might see the young lady - transformed or otherwise - as 'acting' like a slut, the real world includes the fact that promiscuity in young adults and teens arises from being sexually victimized as a child. Limited coping mechanisms plus narrow, family-centric world view and a desperate need for intimacy too often lead to duplicating the same conditions he or she sought to escape.

Our country has adopted a policy that allows shelters to turn away gay and transgender teens. With rejection or worse behind, they are left with few choices, and are a large target demographic for child trafficking. Even many of those who manage to escape that horror manage to end up in series of relationships, seeking someone..anyone to love them.

But with no example at home and condemnation elsewhere, they become have-nots. The sluts...the bimbos... the women who are so much more prey than the predators as whom they are frequently portrayed. People of whom advantages are taken by people who are very much like those who harmed them in the first place. In a way, nothing we could say to describe a slut - trans or CIS - could ever be as humiliating as why they 'became' sluts in the first place.

I have a handful of stories that delve a bit into this.

Not Necessarily

We may be the exceptions that prove the rule (don't look at me, I didn't make up the saying!) but both my brother and I have exceptionally fine hair. It's alright for him, he keeps his hair fairly short. But I have my hair down my back and on a windy day I'm so screwed!

Male body hair

Angharad's picture

is more coarse but frequently men have fine head hair, depending upon which parent they take after. My own hair is very fine, baby fine and flies all over the place with the slightest puff of air despite mousse and hair laquer. Sadly, my daughter has inherited the fine hair but nowhere near as fine as mine. Thankfully, I still have plenty of it, but I rarely manage to keep it tidy and hair grips and clips rarely seem to hold and just fall out. Oh well, I try to count my blessings, there are many with worse hair than mine.

I'm blonde, I think I might even have mentioned here a time or two! Coarse? thick? - I should be so lucky, braids look like rats tails its so damn fine, any attempt at styling is doomed to failure even with grips/clips and sprays! Its no different away from my head, even down there is far from coarse.

Until this thread I was unaware of there being any gender to hair colour or descriptions, I've not even come across that in other languages, certainly not adding the 'e' when I was at school would have resulted in a red pen.

The equivalent to a Valley girl in the UK would be an Essex girl but equally you could have an Essex boy in the same context - the county is not known for its high level of education or high(er) moral compass, the tv show the only way is Essex, TOWIE to its fans, has done nothing to improve that view!
