What ever happened to nylons? Yes, pantyhose largely replaced them, but you can still buy garter belts. What are they supposed to hold up if you can't buy nylons?
The various thigh-high "stay-ups" you can find are made out of the same material as pantyhose, but that's nothing like nylons. Nylons were stockings that came in different sizes, had their own shape, weren't "one size fits all."
Sure, for $50/pair you can find vintage "new in box/envelope" nylons, but the sellers aren't sure what the sizes are, and who's going to pay that much for a pair of nylons?
How come no one makes them anymore? There's been increasing interest in lingerie and sexy clothes for over a decade now -- look at Victoria's Secret. (Yes, I know they're in trouble now and may close many stores, but that's because of the current economic climate.)

The Stocking Store
I just checked and they are still showing on the internet. It's been a year or so, but I wear them. I think that Pantyhose are evil and uncomfortable. I think the last time I wore Stockings, I was standing outside talking to a woman after church and the wind blew my dress, and slip up around my shoulders. The dress was thin pink and white stripes. I was so embarrased.

Simple answer fashion
Well a more complete answer is in two parts.
First part is simply that seeing any part of the garter belt including the tabs is considered obscene dislike other parts of your underwear.
The second part mainly down to fashion is that the dress lengths I so short that you cannot hide the garter belt under it without it being seeing them, that is why everybody stop wearing them in favour for tights.
In regards to buying them I just done a eBay search with only the key word "nylon" and the cheapest pair i found was for £2.

I just did a check on Amazon and found several pair there starting at about USD 15.00. There was three or four styles by Trasparenze and a few other brands.
I know what you mean
I remember going shopping with my girlfriend in the early sixties and her going to the hosiery counter and asking for a specific size and weight of stockings as she examined them there was a definite leg shape to them with a defined foot and an enlargement for the calf. Being a rather tall girl, she had to be sure they were long enough to reach her garters. I think perhaps they were even silk stockings in those days.
However today, the composition of nylons has changed to be more stretchy. I remember the first stockings I wore were seamed and it was an accomplishment to get them on with the seams straight. Girls (my sisters anyway) often checked through the day to see that the seams remained straight. I did witness them bending over and straightening their seams. So I knew how to do it when I "borrowed" them.
Checking, I found a few state side nylon stocking purveyors but the UK and France seem to be the only places that have them in abundance,

A major fashion trend in the last several years is bare legs. So...fewer hosiery choices at all. The late’60s advent of pantyhose had already nearly done in stockings. Vastly increased elasticity in man made hosiery nearly wiped out silk and did wipe out cotton. (Yes, stockings did come in cotton. Learned that as an aide in long term care.) the spread of thong panties wiped out garters as well as VPL. Now you have to shop the salacious lingerie for garter involved unders. (On the side bar: I date myself by revealing I started dating before pantyhose. Of course now I also have to explicate that since most people no longer know there was such a time.)
