Took the little one, okay well she isn't that little any more so let's say youngest, To go see Captain Marvel this afternoon at the theater.
With few exceptions, I've enjoyed most all the Marvel Comic movies although I have to say I think Captain Marvel is the best movie they have done so far for story line. Of course the graphics are exceptional as always.
I've no idea how close it may be to the original comic books as it was one I never saw, but it was outstanding and I have to say the 50 bucks I spent to get tickets, popcorn and drinks for the 3 of us was worth the money, something I can't say for most movies.
On the way to the car afterword, my 11 year old autistic girl told me, "I've got a new favorite superhero"

It's a similar origin to the comic books but the Kree who gave Carol Danvers her powers was male in the comics(the first Captain Marvel)...he didn't die like in the movie, it was actually Carol Danvers who almost died but was saved by him.

I have to agree, this was one of the best Marvel movies so far.
I have not seen that many little girls in a Super Hero movie before. But seeing so many actually made me happy.
Marvel has a formula and they stick too it and it is still paying off over 10 years later, since the first Marvel movie Iron man came out.

When I was a kid in the 1950s Captain Marvel was male and invoked his powers by uttering the magic word "SHAZAM". I don't have a problem with the super-heroine being female (I think that's great) but a little acknowledgement of the origins would be nice.

to is not the same as the Captain Marvel that exists in the Marvel universe, he was actually called Mar-Vell(1967-1983) or Captain Mar-Vell.
Originally the character you are referring to was part of the DCU and it is as you say. Billy Batson got his powers by saying Shazam, which was the name of the wizard that chose him to become World’s Mightiest Mortal Captain Marvel(Whiz Comics 1939). He has nothing to do with Carol Danvers.
There has always been a misunderstanding regarding the origins of the two different 'Captain Marvels'.
Carol Danvers as in the movie Captain Marvel is about the 7th or 8th iteration of the Captain Marvel Character only arriving in comic books 2012. Monica Rambeau was the first female Captain Marvel, her arrival in comics being round 1982.

Captain Marvel origins
The Billy Batson Captain Marvel originated in the 1940s with a company called Fawcett. He outsold Superman (National Comics, now DC) for part of that time. In the 40s Marvel comics were published by Timely, though they did have a comic called Marvel Comics.
It gets complicated with lawsuits and other companies getting into the act. By the late 60s, Marvel was publishing Captain Marvel with the spaceborn male character who later died of cancer after giving his powers to Carol Danvers, a US Air Force pilot. Meanwhile, DC was re-publishing the old CM (with the magic lightning bolt) which they had acquired the rights to. They had to call the comic Shazam though because Marvel owned the trademark to Captain Marvel.
Now DC is calling their character Shazam and he gets a movie later this year, too. :)
But it is even more complicated than that summary. :)

Acronym
Way back in the old days, SHAZAM was an acronym for the gods, demigods, and heros whose aspects were combined in the character: Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury. There is mention of that in the 1941 Republic Pictures serial "Adventures of Captain Marvel".
Personally, I always thought he fell a bit short on the "Wisdom of Solomon" part.
