WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A former Army commander who underwent a sex change operation was discriminated against by the U.S. government, a federal judge ruled Friday in an important victory for transgenders claiming bias in the workplace.
Diane Schroer won her federal lawsuit against the Library of Congress after officials backed out of a 2005 job offer when told of her intention to become a transsexual. At the time of the job interview for a position as a senior terrorism research analyst, David Schroer was a male. He had been a onetime Army Special Forces commander.

I'm sick of a United States in which ACLU is a four letter word and "LIBERAL" is tossed around as an epithet.
According to my dictionary a liberal is someone who supports civil liberties, democratic reforms, and use of governmental power to promote social progress. There is NOTHING inherently sinister in the LIBERAL world view.
McCain and Obama are both trying to position themselves as champions of reform. That by definition makes them both LIBERAL. Supporting civil liberties is becoming more popular every day as we rethink what has happened under the Bush adminsitration. Using governmental power to promote social progress is what the mortgage bailout is all about. The three gentlemen who surrounded Bush on Friday during his press conference didn't look like stereotypical LIBERALS, but they must be. They are advocating using more power ($$$$) than ever before to promote social progress in the financial sector.
As you adroitly state, ACLU has a purpose -- as do those with LIBERAL points of view. Our country is only great when conservatives and liberals seek common ground and RESPECT on another.
The next time you sneer as you say either LIBERAL or CONSERVATIVE think about what you'e doing. Eisenhower was one of my favorite presidents. Was he a liberal or a conservative? Read his exit speech and give me your opinion. I'll tell you upfront -- he was an American.

This is already illegal
in the UK, and has been for a number of years under anti-discrimination law. Sadly, that doesn't always stop it, after all robbery is illegal...

I haven't heard from her since that last time she was at my support group so I was extremely happy to hear she had won her case. I hope she comes back to our rooms and talks about it.
I think it didn't hurt to have an All-American hero status to back her up. On top of that she is now a HEROINE in my book for standing up to the man and fighting the good fight just like the good soldier she was.
Anybody, know how this might affect case law ? There is still no actual law that prevents discrimination since ENDA did not include us.

Judge's ruling
The judge ruled that this was a sex discrimination suit. Since there would have been no problem hiring a male, she was rejected for being female. It will be interesting to see if an appeal is made and if it overturns that ruling.
