So, got home last night, turned PC on and a minute later - nada!
Yep you got it, Mad's PC has issues, it won't boot. There was no indication of an issue previously, no warning, its never been connected to the internet so not a virus but it's effectively dead.
The only good news is that the only work I can't access is the half chapter of Gaby book 24 I wrote on Monday. I'm sure everything is there still, just need to get to it!
There may be a delay in getting stuff out but hopefully it's just a short blip.

Have you had a big update from Microsoft? I have just finished 3 hours online with Microsoft support (3 different areas) trying to sort the mess that their updates caused. In my case it screwed my browser so could connect to anything. Some of the apps still do not seem to run as fast as they should, but I can't afford another 3 hrs at this time.

When you press the power button do you hear anything, fans or any beeps ( beeps are very important)

If desktop and no noise at all, no fans run or no hard drive noise. Then it's likely to be a power supply unit fault (PSU), sometimes there is a switch on the back, click off then on then power switch
If still nothing. Then that's the prob. Or simply it's a 13amp fuse in the lead. A test could be swap lead with monitor and try again, if the base works, then it's the fuse.
If fans and hard drive noise come on, it could be the graphics card.

Stuff but won't actually start the OS - I have noises and I have graphics. It's a puzzle.

Maddy, try booting the pc from your windows/macOS disc, if it boots from a CD-ROM you might have a hard drive failure :(

Without more information, I can't troubleshoot remotely.
However, assuming it's a PC,and running one of the last four operating systems, if you turn it on, does it go through the windows screen, then stop just _before_ you'd see your desktop/login? If so, try 'ctl-alt-escape' (or even ctrl-alt-delete). If that brings up the task manager, go to 'run', and type in 'explorer.exe' and run it.
I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.
