It would depend upon where. There are lots of places where no one would bat an eye. (But they might ask what exactly he wanted shaved.)
I grew up in the South, and while I never want to move back, I also know that, despite the popular prejudices in the rest of the USA, it's not an undifferentiated mass of uneducated bigots, either.
(Someone might call the Fashion Police, though.)
