I have just received an advisory that a new and dangerous virus is being spread under the heading "Invitation", and can be spread by infiltration into the email addresses of any contact. If you receive any communication with this heading the advice is to shut down your unit immediately even if the email is ostensibly from a friend. This may of course be a hoax, but I received the warning from a usually reliable source so I'm passing it on. Better safe, etc.,
Joanne

Don't open mail you're not sure of

erin's picture

It's that simple. Also, don't use Outlook or Outlook Express because they are the most commonly used mail programs and the crackers OWN them.

I only read email on one of my Macs because crackers have not invested a lot of time and effort exploiting Mac vulnerabilities (smaller in any case), mostly because at only about 8% of market, it just doesn't give them the bang for the evil buck they are looking for.

Take precautions, use anti-virus and firewalls and anti-spyware. To paraphrase an old health film, good computing is safe computing. :)

Hugs,
Erin

"invitation" hoax, but....

Piper's picture

the "invitation" virus is listed as a hoax on many sites, but it's always best to follow the advice that Erin gave. As some perverted crackers and scriptkiddies have taken to making virii based on hoaxes.
