I've coped with a fair bit over the last six years of health troubles, so why have just spent the last half hour sitting in my living room crying my eyes out. My left arm was paralysed for more than month, cramps in my hands bend and twist my fingers and I've no control over them, even the drag in my leg that means using a cane to walk, so why does not being able to go to the toilet upset me so much? Everything the doctor has prescribed has had a minor immediate but temporary benefit, and then added added another problem. I've done everything recommended, but it just keeps getting worse, I don't think I've ever felt so low as this.

I can't fault her really

she's going through the standard procedure for the complaint, but it's not working. I'll see her again on Monday morning, and hopefully I can communicate the exact nature of it a bit more effectively than I seem to have so far... I'm always a bit afraid of overstating things with doctors, and the necessary vocabulary doesn't trip off my tongue.

We're all here for you.

Most of us don't have a medical vocabulary. Half the time I'm groaning and pointing to where it hurts like a three year old. But always keep in mind a second and even third opinion.

Medical Emergency?

I don't remember you explaining what your medical problems have been up to now, but some of your symptoms sound a lot like what happens when the spinal cord gets pinched by something, such as a bulging disk or a fractured/collapsed vertebra (which can happen without provocation in cases of osteoporosis).

If the bathroom problem is a sudden new addition, and the spine is involved, this is a medical emergency, and you should pop in to the local A&E forthwith so they can rule out "cauda equina" syndrome, or in the event that's what it is, correct the situation before permanent damage results.

Best of luck, and I hope you're feeling better soon.

I Feel Helpless

I read your blog and there's not a damn thing I can do except sympathise. I don't even know enough about what your symptoms mean to make any useful comment. All I can say is "Get Better Soon" and tell you how much I like your stories, if that helps any,
Hugs,
Joanne

a bit embarassed

I don't know why I overreacted like this yesterday, and I feel rather foolish. I was diagnosed with MS six years ago, but it hasn't been a huge problem, I've been stable for the last three or four years with no new symptoms, and only a slight progression. I haven't taken anything today, which has felt better though my original problem is still there, so it's back to the surgery in the morning... hopefully I can get a few days off work, as my assistant's back from India tomorrow.

On a wholly superficial level, there is a plus. I've been watching what I eat more carefully the last few weeks, and I'm back down to 150lbs... not bad for a six footer, and something else for the girls in work to be jealous of :)

Thanks for the messages of support everyone, even if I am a bit of drama queen.

Not at all.

Everyone's entitled to a bit of a winge now and again. Why should you be any different?

150 lbs? That's pretty skinny - 10st 10lbs in English. I had a mate who was 6'5" and weighed in at 160lbs (11st 6lbs) when he was racing fit. Mind you, he looked quite ill then, so you be careful. A little bit of meat doesn't do any harm.

Look after yourself and good luck at the docs.
