It's also my birthday. So, even though I'm of Scottish (or Irish depending on who's doing the genealogy) I have something in common with the Welsh, or at least their patron saint.

Hugs

Not long got back from taking my Mother out to Lunch. She was born on this day in 1922. Yep, she's 95.
Enjoy your day.

Vegetable

Daffodils are the flowers now. Cenhinen in Welsh, while 'leek' is cennin. There is a suggestion that the two plants are used because of a confusion arising from the similarity of the Welsh words, starting in the 19th century. The original story was that Dewi Sant told Welsh soldiers to wear a leek in their headgear as a battlefield distinguishing mark. The daffodil is also known (in Welsh) as the March lily, March flower and Peter's leek.

Dydd Dewi Sant was also used as a WWI recruiting slogan--"Welshmen always march the first!"

Daffodil is the official flower

the leek is the national vegetable and St David is patron saint. If ever you watch Wales playing at any sport but especially rugby union, you'll see loads of leeks and daffs on display as well as red dragons and the ladies stove pipe hats, traditionally worn with a lace cap underneath.

The origin of my characters in Sisters and Cold Feet, such ladies' traditional clothing is said to have been mistaken for British Army redcoat uniforms and shakoes by an invading French force, who sort of surrendered.

The problem with the legend being

the stovepipe hats were introduced some time after the Napoleonic wars, unless they were wearing top hats. It is mentioned in the wiki article.
