It came to my attention this evening that The southern Comfort Transsexual Conference is no more!

http://www.tgforum.com/wordpress/index.php/the-southern-comf...

I attended in 2009 and it was a life changing event for me.

The Con had relocated from Atlanta Ga. to Ft. Lauderdale, but apparently there were some lawsuits that have ended the Con that had been a fixture for Trans folks for 26 years!

I am saddend by this news and sad for all those who never got the chance to attend and experience the Conference, as well as for those who never will have that chance now.

What a sad, sad world we live in. Where something as vital as the SCC can be brought low by spurious and hateful litigation, brought to it's knees and then to it's end.

SCC...

I had heard that too. I attended from 1997 through 2004 when my father started getting sick. It was a wonderful experience and gave me a chance to speak with several GRS surgeons before making my final choice.. I made a lot of great friends too!!

Mixed feelings

I went to four of them, in all their Atlanta venues.

The conference has always had its seedier side, a bit of a trans-fan meat market thing going on. The area was awash with them. There were participants who organized certain kinds of sex parties etc.

Don't get me wrong, they did a lot of good too and I learned alot from the presentations given, like those by Kathe Perez and serious medical presenters. But, if you were an attractive non-op T of some kind then you were targeted.

I can't help but thinking some semi-official SCC event went bad or some event goer did something to some unwary hotel guest.

Still, I'm sad this has disappeared. The article mentioned a possible alternative format. It will be telling by what the new format and attendance rules are, what the issue was that caused the lawsuit.

Whatever Cathy said.

I went when Cathy did and would not have gone if she had not nagged me to do it because I was so shy then. It was still fun, and I travelled as an aging Muslim woman for maximum concealment. It was fun.

For those who can, there is still a transgender conference in Port Angeles, Washington that has been going on for a long time. Here is the link, otherwise I know nothing about it and have not attended.

Different time of the year

Esprit is in May. SCC is in September, so it may be difficult for people to change plans for it.

Fantasia Fair may benefit from this though it tends to try to keep itself fairly small, no more then 160 or so else it will outstrip its facilities. OTOH, P-town has unpredictable weather that time of year and can get rainy and chilly. Being at the very tip of the Cape, it gets a bit of a weather lottery. For the last one, we were pretty much near capacity so it may cause problems for regular attendees to get a seat if they do not act sooner. Hmmm.

I went to some kind of a

convention in Denver in 1991. I met a Tgal from my home town, same therapist; we were friends for a while. Met Virginia Prince and saw a presentation by Stanley Biber. I was just starting my RLT; I flew to and from as me. I thought it was funny Sunday AM, all these people changing into drab. I felt good that I didn't. Back then I was passable (still am sorta; just an oldish lumpy womyn) and kinda pretty. I'm not into people/parties, etc. that much. Saved my money, never went again, anywhere. Finished RLT and went to Biber.

Hugs and Bright Blessings,
