Amazingly, I have obtained a free laptop!
Toshiba Satellite 1850
Processor: IBM 386
RAM: 4Mb
Hard Drive: 120 Mb
Monochrome B/W LCD
OS: DOS 5.0
The floppy drive is dead and I can't use it for the internet, but I've always had a soft spot in my heart for decrepit electronics.

ahh ancient hardware...
One of the funnest thing I have ever done with my old clunker of a 486 was to write a Toy OS in TASM. pretty fun if you're really really geeky.(more like a boot loader then an OS though)
Another idea for the thing is to use it as a defecto micro controller, the parallel port can be use to set logic high and low , and you can feed that stuff straight to TTL digital IC's which means you can use it for lots of fun things
But to be honest with a Dead disk drive , And your one Dos version behind not having Interlink on system so you can't even use a Null modem setup for file transfer (although you might have some other type of software on board to do that same thing) your kind of stuck with a system that you can't really do much with. But I'm guessing this is all simple for the nostalgia of it but it be neat if you could make it do something useful for ya.
Just though of something Dos 5.0 iirc introduced Qbasic as part of the Os package, if you don't have any way to setup a null modem connection via some normal dos tools , you could in theroy program a simple setup in qbasic. via open"com:1................"
Qbasic hmm?
Must look up resources for this, as this may be my chance to begin to learn programming on something I can't really hurt.
If only the floppy drive worked I had been thinking it might, with a bit of work, be a nice upgrade to the hotel I work at's MICROS system circa 1985 that we're still holding together with nothing but duct tape and willpower.

For a moment there
I was trying to decipher what this drabble was REALLY saying.
The hidden joke or denoument. Force of habit, heh heh.
Laptops are great, though on my Dell the button that serves as a mouse is right
where the spacer bar is on my normal keyboard, and I wind up all over the place,
doing things I never intended to. I find that it's like writing left handed,
it can be done but barely. I loaned it to a couple I know so I don't
have to deal with it, but that's not really a solution. Bah...

Hmmm. That one won't make a good planter.
LOL - I've got a 90 MHz box collecting dust in my basement... SCSI Adaptor; JAZZ drives; stuff... Maybe I should see if it still starts and if there's anything on the platters worth anything...

Ellen Hayes
has an old box she uses for writing. Her SCSI adaptor just went kerflooey on her and she was wondering if anyone had an old controller that might fit in her box. Details at http://barkingduck.net/ehayes under her Jun 17th blog entry. If you decide to get rid of the old thing, well, she might be able to use it.
Hugs,
Erin
