I have a curious question that may develope into something more.
So let's say you're playing an MMO and you have made your character as a female (or male as you prefer) and you've been enjoying yourself. Suddenly you find yourself yanked into the world of the game, where you are not only the gender you chose in character creation but also the same class and race.
Would you want to leave? Would you try? What would you do in this new existence?

That would depend on which game im sucked into. Some games have extreamly violent settings which i would not want to be a part of. I mean, imagine living in the world of Diablo....*cringe*
In the case of EvE online i'd have to say, no, i wouldnt want to leave. I mean i have but 2 people in this whole world that would miss me, and one isn't goning to last too much longer. So the chance to not only be basiclly immortal, a billionaire, and freely travel space? What wouldn't i do in that situation?

Nah, Null sec. can be pretty fun if you know what you're doing. Slip in and out through wormhole space with a Cov-ops ship is probablly the best way, or get involved with the nations.
Sure, you dont actually see your character too much and it takes a bit to get used to that fact, but i do agree i'd like to see the Walking in Stations expanded.

I would be a bard, and write stories about it. :P I actually play a bard in the MMO I'm into currently, but it's more like an archer. In reality, and depending on the type of world, I'd probably just stay and live as a woman. Maybe get a job as a blacksmith, like Kate in A Knight's Tale.
I'm also working on a story with this premise in my spare time. Gearing it more for mainstream fiction though, and the character that becomes a woman "in game" is not very happy about it... at first.

Yeah i was pretty surprised with the direction FFXIV took the bard, and to be honest i was put off of the class because of it, having played FFXI i felt the bard should have stayed magic based.. but it ended up working pretty good. Still, i play a scholar, black mage, white mage and summoner, earning the Grandmaster of Magic title.
FFXIV would be a very close second choise in game worlds i wouldn't mind living in.

I played a (female, obviously) Miqote bard in FFXIV and had a lot of fun as I've always gone for long-ranged physical attack types when playing MMOs. Or other RPGS, for that matter- every time I play through FFX, my entire battle strategy is built around Wakka. To answer the OP's question, it'd definitely depend on the game world. FFXIV? Probably. The Fallout universe? Probably not.
Mass Effect? DEFINITELY. :-D

I'm not a MMO player but do play RPGs (AD&D, shadowrun...) and in that case it will depends on what game do the switch happen.
I don't look to be turn into an Ork, Sapient Mutated Tiger, some Human/Angel/Demon hybrid and some others. Some male some female.
They all where fun to play, explore something different, but...
Give me there powers, but not necessarily the other side of those coin's I would be glade. Give me the physical sex of some, H*** Yes.!

If I could choose the game in question, there is no question.
If it were Diablo like Sadarsa mentioned - Yuck. I'd want to leave despite the fact I was now one of my badass characters I have in that game.
However, like TMF I also play RPG's. Now if I could choose to be "yanked into the world of the game" of my preferred adventure, then YES I'd want to stay. There was one RPG that I was involved in for many years (sadly now defunct due to it eventually losing a core member or two) that I just LOVED. It was a Whitewolf crossover storyline. We had Mages and Changing Breed as the primary PC's, and we dealt with/encountered Mages/Vampires/Shifters/Mummys/etc in the course of the game. My character was SO MUCH FUN to play, I just loved her! I'd be her again 'for reals' without a second thought.

My new book (currently being proof-read) is called Tamsyn. It's about a guy who played a girl in RPG and due to various quirks becomes the character for real, but in the real world, a world that is linked to the swords and sorcery of the legends of the RPG. I better not give any more away, but it will be out and available on Amazon Kindle format next week.
I've been writing this one for a few years... it was the research that got me bogged down in Arthurian legends.

You are not the first to do it. I remember at least one book, where a player of "Forgotten Realms" ended up in 8th century Wales. As an elf. (Cross gender due to a set of circumstances). Oh, and without magic. The genre was alternative history. The language - Russian. I think it was written in 2009 or so.

I remember that story, more of a 'you become your character in real life' as opposed to the 'getting sucked into a game' concept. I don't recall that story ever being finished though. Overall there's a ton of stories where people become thier characters, Eos was one that i really looked forward to but ended up dying off as well. Also there was Whisper in the Whately stories, it started off awesome and i had hoped that rather than becoming the character in real life he/she stayed in the game world, but eneded up disapointed by that. Not that Whisper wasn't a really good story.

There was also "The Purple Tulip" which is actually about several characters getting sucked into a game set in the 1600s before and during a war.

on par with Robert Silverbergs Guardians of the Flame series, it can be a "sticky wicket" as our cousins across the pond would say. IF you were just you, but with the characters knowledge (like in the books, but they also had to fight the personalities they had picked for their characters) then yes i would stay. i hardly ever make "anti me" characters, so i would fit in any one. now a female dwarf i MIGHT have second thoughts about lol

Please recommend a game
I've read the posts and been a bit confused by the multiplicity of them. I'm not an experienced gamer. I don't want to kill or be killed.
Please recommend some female games I can feel comfortable with and enjoy.

what someone likes in a game might be what you hate most about it.
look through and find games the meet your interests, then start trying them out.
there is no single game, or even style of gameplay in a particular game, that fits everyone.
I personally tend to ignore pvp games, more into quest type, or building type games. the combat isn't my main interest.

Everyone is different and therefor find different games applealing to them than someone else. I for one find WoW to be .. meh. It's an ok game but not one i could devote myself to (i've tried). While the final fantasy mmo's ( first final fantasy 11 then later 14) held my attention off and on for nearly 10 years now. I loved Star Wars Galaxies, but was quickly bord with Star Wars: The old Republic. and EvE is a game that while it's my current passion, is one that i can't really recommend sadly, unless you have people you already know that play it or the patience of a saint since the learning curve is extreamly steep and damn near unending. I've been playing it for 4 years and i still feel like a total noobie... but to me that's what makes it so very interesting.
Some suggestions
If you don't like violent games, there are other options. Some games that I enjoyed: Heart's Medicine, Shadwen (you can play through without killing anyone), The Talos Principle, Creeper World, Bloons, Zuma/Luxor, Portal (there are shooting turrets, but they're just obstacles), World of Goo, Bejeweled, Bit Trip Beat, Intake. I enjoyed Mirror's Edge too but played violently, I hear it can be played otherwise. There are also games in which "killing" isn't aggressive - Aquaria, Plants vs Zombies, tower defense games in general. You could also take a look at visual novels, hidden object and time management games.
These games aren't specifically targeted at girls, just fun games. In my experience, any game that is explicitly gendered is a waste of time.
Hope this leads to a story
When playing, I take virtual risks that I wouldn't if it was real. Hacking and slashing at enemies is very different in person than when seated in a comfy chair in front of a screen, and while a virtual death doesn't worry me much, the threat of real injury would keep me away from fights I'm not overqualified for. On the other hand, I might communicate and interact more easily with people in person than with a mouse and keyboard, and I would care more about my avatar, environment and choices.
Whether I would want to leave depends on the situation. If there was a significant risk of harm, yes. If staying meant neglecting my family / business, yes. If I had no possibility of return, or could return to the time and place where I left, I could immerse myself in the new world.
My first reactions after the yank would be bewilderment, deal with the immediate situation, find a secure location to evaluate things. From a safe space I can carefully explore and figure out what works. What's next depends on what I'm able to do, who is there and what they want, and what the risks and rewards are that face me.
