set off by the strangest things, let me set the scene
Suffering from a migraine [I do not get the auditory component of migraine that causes nausea, which is why it probably took the medical types took so long to diagnose my suffering with Migraines], I was sat in a darkened room listening to music, most of the time it is just there but like with a lot of things something catches you in that place between you the conscious and subconscious, and a lyric begins to roll around in what I [laughingly] call a mind.

UGLY KID JOE "Cats In The Cradle"
'

My child arrived just the other day,
He came to the world in the usual way.
But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay.
He learned to walk while I was away.
And he was talking 'fore I knew it, and as he grew,
He'd say, "I'm gonna be like you, dad.
You know I'm gonna be like you."

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then.
You know we'll have a good time then."

My son turned ten just the other day.
He said, "Thanks for the ball, dad, come on let's play.
Can you teach me to throw?" I said, "Not today,
I got a lot to do." He said, "That's ok."
And he walked away, but his smile, lemme tell you,
Said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah.
You know I'm gonna be like him."

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then.
You know we'll have a good time then."

Well, he came from college just the other day,

So much like a man I just had to say,
"Son, I'm proud of you. Can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head, and he said with a smile,
"What I'd really like, dad, is to borrow the car keys.
See you later. Can I have them please?"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
"When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then, dad.
You know we'll have a good time then."

I've long since retired and my son's moved away.
I called him up just the other day.
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind."
He said, "I'd love to, dad, if I could find the time.
You see, my new job's a hassle, and the kid's got the flu,
But it's sure nice talking to you, dad.
It's been sure nice talking to you."
And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me,
He'd grown up just like me.
My boy was just like me.

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
"When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then, dad.
You know we'll have a good time then."
'

"Where are you going with this?" you ask

Well the particular part that caused the thought processes was

He'd say, "I'm gonna be like you, dad.

You know I'm gonna be like you."

But as I said I was suffering with a migraine and couldn't go looking for stories, so I filed it away for later analysis as to why.

So yesterday I read something that rekindled that thought process, and in essence it is this,
The Father / Son relationship becomes a Mother / Daughter when both transition.
I know I have read more than one story here.
The one that immediately springs to mind is from the S.P.A./A New Style of Education Universe and that would be Karen Page's A Strange Attraction to Concrete Cows with Karen's characters Julia and Bill/Jill. Although Bill/Jill's reason is different and is due to a medical condition.

Can anyone suggest any more?

Ugly Kid Joe

Sammi's picture

are a band from around the same period in time as NIRVANA.

I have several versions of 'Cat's In The Cradle' all by different artists, it was just happenstance that it was the version by Ugly Kid Joe that I heard that on particular day as there are >150,000 mp3 tracks on my media player a 'RANDOMIZED' playlist.

Thank you for letting me know the Original artists name, I Shall check if I have it and if not I'll see if I can buy his album containing the track.
