It's more comercialism than anything in this case
People see the name "Phelps" and it grabs attention, its a household name, you don't even need to watch the Olympics to know who he is. They are in the business of selling papers, they have to bold the more recognizable name.
The US Media only seem to report US winners
and as 90% of US Sport on TV is played by MEN then it is results involving US Men that make the headlines. Who pays the piper and all that.
The misogyny is pretty well universal
The truth is that women's sports are seen very much as secondary to the men's who are the real athletes - yeah right. Things are improving very, very slowly and often with and accompanying patronising smile. So that headline could occur almost anywhere. The UK press has improved and this week Laura Trott featured on the front of several newspapers, on her own and with Jason Kenny but more often you won't find much in most of them about women's sports.

I'm not Impressed Either
While all of the comments so far are good and true, remember that the US (and world) "News" Media is owned and controlled primarily by men. And it is as much a part of the "old boys club" as any other company. The majority (over half) of men in the US (and the world) consider women to be inferior and only good for serving them and making babies. While women have gained much over the last one hundred years, women are still not given equal status by most men. Women still make less money for the same work, etc. Now this is all generally true, although there are some exceptions; there are companies owned and run by women, for example.
I am glad that there are those of us who have never subscribed to that barbaric and uncivilized belief. I for one will continue to set a good example for all to see, and hopefully others will learn by my example and behave better than they have in the past.
Thanks for posting this Julia. :)
Hugs to all,

Well...
Yay patriarchy and misogyny? It's to be expected in this twisted world. It's getting better but as it's getting better the opposition is fighting tooth and nail.
I know who I am, I am me, and I like me ^^

Let's not be too quick
I don't think this is a sexual discrimination thing.
I think it's more because Phelps now has the most olympic medals EVER, he has the most swimming medals in this Olympics, and he has also claimed that this is his last Olympics. And therefore, he has the more newsworthy story and merits the bigger headline. It is beside the point that he is a guy. This is NOT how women are treated regularly. This is NOT misogyny. I am sure if Phelps was a woman, it would be the same. Remember Flo-Jo? I'm sure no one was complaining when a woman was grabbing most of the headlines then. It's just a case of which is the bigger/most newsworthy story.
There may be some misogynistic articles about the Olympics, but this particular article isn't one of them.
Let's not be too quick to judge or pull the trigger on the discrimination thing.

For your information
I chose this selection because it was exactly posted as a sexual discrimination thing.
An Austrian woman posted this with the caption "This is what it is like to be woman in the 21st century. We have all achieved so little to dispel this all-invasive misogyny." (My translation from the original German)
Women today put up with this crap daily.
I chose to post this for two reasons:
a) the Olympics are current
and
b) We authors, however far we might personally be along the 'trans' journey, need to know how (some) women feel.
For your consideration.
No, It is what it is.
People, as much as they wish to or would like to; simply cannot change methods, ideas, or how people think overnight as many are trying to do; that have been in place for centuries.
We are working at it, but it does take time.
All you can do, IN A NICE WAY; is to point out the inequalities to the person, business, organization, working place, employers, courts, and so forth; and work to get things changed.
You will NEVER get things changed by force or violence, as some wish to do these days.
All you wind up with the other party getting "their back up" and "digging in their heels" and having a complete refusal of change for the better.
This is my take and belief on it all for what it is worth.
