It looks like updates to my site are only possible on Sundays! Once again the new stuff that I couldn't load on Wednesday has been uploaded at the first attempt today! I'll try again this week.

Aren't they?

Yes, they are. Most frustrating.
When I was building computers (many years ago) I would buy a large number of common devices (MB, hard drives, memory, etc). I'd grab the parts in order to create a computer. I'd install the O/S, then the software. After that, I'd test the computers to ensure that they were Okey Dokey. As we would expect, they followed the laws of probability. Most were almost identical. A few were really quick. A few were troublesome. Yet, they were as identical as I could make them. Yet, there were measurable differences.
Now, when my students complain about their computers, I shrug, and exclaim, "Ain't technology wonderful?"
Best of luck, girl. I love Gaby! So, as far as I'm concerned, it's worth all your effort and frustration. I'll just hope that somehow the gremlins that have infected your system depart to places unknown.

Been, There sort of.

I once built two identical computers from new parts with identical OS. One was fast(for its time) the other was quirky slow at times. They stayed that way and I never could find any obvious cause.

I also did OS upgrades on four salvages identical(yes all identical hardware) business computers to give to nephews. The performance on them varied all over the place. Go figure!

PS. Yes, I know I made two separate posts in the same thread at once. It seems clearer that way.

Only Sunday?

Hypatia Littlewings's picture

I wonder why Sunday?

Sometimes the obvious difference is hiding some other factor.
This sort of reminds me of the following odd RL tech story;
"The Car That Hated Vanilla Ice Cream"{link}
I wonder what other factors are involved.

Some personal experience:
I notice that I have a lot of internet problems first thing in the morning on business days from a bit before local 9 am till around 10 am or bit later. I have come to suspect a regular temporary local surge in commercial web traffic. Therefore, I simply avoid doing any up-loading and down-loading during those hours. It is still annoying though.

I hope you figure it out. A lot of people love following your stories.

Businesses are sleeping...

Saturday some business users upload their stuff that they were supposed to upload on friday. But on sunday with only private users uploads processing part is not overloaded and can work.
It was more fun in the times of dial up internet. When you could see that it started raining by the drop in the internet connection speed. :-)

Yes... frustrating...

You could find reason for every problem and correct it with enough time, resources and high enough administrative privileges...
My last upgrade was funny - got newer motherboard, much faster CPU, and faster memory.... To find 10% drop in performance... Was able to salvage some of the lost performance and gain a bit by tweaking memory timings and overclocking CPU :-)

his revenge on the hubris of humanity would be the computer - the bastard!

Year Zero

rebecca.a's picture

In the amusing novel "Year Zero" by Rob Reid, the earth has been visited by aliens, unseen, for many years. They take over the identities of humans so they can observe us up close and interact with us. In the 1970s they are concerned that humanity is about to go through a period called "the great acceleration" (in which the fields of biology, materials science, physics etc are all sped up by advances in information technology), but our society is too primitive. So one of the aliens takes the place of a young man named Bill Gates, and he invents Windows, to slow productivity to a crawl.

not as think as i smart i am

But to really foul things up requires a computer.

Not Sure What You Mean...

I accessed Gaby 439 via Page 600 on Thursday (PST), so it was up there by February 12. (Just checked my history page.)

I don't see anything new there today.

Stupid Computers

I know this isn't especially helpful but "Stupid Computers" is a redundant expression. ;)

Computers are only as smart

as the person who programmed them. Usually this would read "the person using them," but nowadays there's software for darn near everything, and almost nobody will mess with command line, which is where that particular phrase originated.

Computers are like that friend of yours who has tons of logic but no common sense or creativity: give them numbers and data and they can correlate it and do what you want within the terms of what they're told. If you tell them the wrong thing to do? Well, not their fault, is it? And with how opaque the layers are for what a machine's actually doing when you give it a command, there's no way to tell where a mistake originates, or from whom along the line.

I love computers, but dealing with actual productivity on one when you're looking for anything more than basic clerical work can be a real pain if you haven't spent years training on how to handle situation like Maddy's.

Ego problems

All computers have a severe ego problem - you are going to things THEIR way, or they won't do it.

Don't let someone else talk you out of your dreams. How can we have dreams come true, if we have no dreams?

Dreams Coming True?

Daphne Xu's picture

Now really, would one really want one's dreams to come true? (Think of the island in "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader".) I occasionally include nightmare sequences in my stories. One doesn't want them to happen in real life.

It's the dreaded machine

It's the dreaded machine union! They're going on strike!

I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.
