Dear Fellow-Travellers

I am amazed that this story did not get onto BCTS within a few minutes of being posted – so a few hours late – here it is.

There is now a GENUINE example of a person labelled from birth as a BOY and then in her late teens being re-assessed as a GIRL with AIS.
After many investigations, a minute ‘proto-womb’ was detected and this was sufficient with hormone encouragement to develop into a working womb and she has now given birth to TWINS.

We can be confident that many more stories will arrive with this format despite the minute percentage of people with all the characteristics necessary for this woman to become true. Isn’t life complicated.

Link to Telegraph, Daily Mail and others . Some lewdly, some with vulgarity, some with an attempt at fact and even tolerance and kindness.

I don’t know how USA, for example, is reporting the story. (I suspect some grubby commentaries!)

Read carefully

erin's picture

She was identified as female from birth, the fact that she is XY chromosomally was not discovered until her teens.

Hugs,
Erin

= Give everyone the benefit of the doubt because certainty is a fragile thing that can be shattered by one overlooked fact.

More interesting than one would realize.

It seems that the proto-uterus was only a few millimeters in size, and the doctors gtt it to grow to the point she could become pregnant and have children.

Never a Boy

She was raised from birth as a girl because she has a vulva, a vagina and no male reproductive organs. She was diagnosed as an XY womyn with CAIS at 19 when she went a Dr. to find out why she wasn't having periods (not an action many boys would take). I doubt that many have chromosome checks unless there is some abnormality, so no one would have a reason to think she was a boy.

Basically, one's sex is determined by genes which can't be determined by a chromosome test. There are a number of ways a womyn can develop with what looks like X and Y chromosomes.

Hugs and Bright Blessings,
Renee

Also, just something to think about.

From the one articles. It seems she gave birth naturally. Not a c-section. With not complications. So, the question of weather the plumbing that AIS women are born with. Vagina and vulva, etc. Are real and completely working, or vestige tissue that won't work, has been answer. With the answer being that an AIS vagina, vulva, etc, are as real as an XX woman's vagina, vulva, etc. With those parts work in allowing natural birth.

From what I have been reading on the subject, there has been a bit of debate.

But, these articles put that one to rest.

Though, it does rate a good question. What part of the human chromosome structure does the code for a vagina and vulva come from. Clearly not the the father's X chromosome. And while her womb, even small as it was, came from the mother's X chromosome, I am not sure about the vagina and vulva. Because, if that was the case, would those to parts have been underdeveloped as well. Which is not the case.

Doctors just claim that the X and Y chromosomes are the only parts of the genetic code, when it come to gender, because they are the main differences between women and man at the genetic level. But, this was never completely proven. It was just taken on the assumption that was completely true. And it became medical dogma decades before gene sequencing research came about. So, they would have had no way to know that for sure at the time.

But, in truth the major determining fact on gender in the womb is whether, or not, the baby is exposed to testosterone or not. And the problem is that this expose takes place at least twice. Once for the brain. And once for the genitalia and reproductive orders. When this process goes wrong, this is a major reason some people are transgendered.

And went one thinks about it, the vagina and vulva is just various types of skin and muscle tissues, with a few glands, some nerve bundles, and a urethra, put together. So, it is possible the actual code for the vagina and vulva might be part of the same chromosomes that hold the blueprints for muscle and skin creation. Because those parts of woman's AIS DNA, whom gave birth in the article, would not be damaged.

Just something to think about.

A bit like me?

There is something else about this story ... I'll wait to see if anyone picks up on the Husband. Enough clues for now. Medically, ah, I'm not sure about the reliability of it, though I sure wish it could be true.

I'm either XXY non Klinefelter's or AIS. Didn't spend enough money to find out for sure. This story couldn't happen in America unless the parents were rich enough to pay for it.

Gwen

Yes and no.

This story couldn't happen in America unless the parents were rich enough to pay for it.

Like everything else. It is more of a case of shopping around. For example, there are some companies that only do catscans, and they tend to be within the seven to eight hundred dollar range for a scan. That is cheap, compared to many scans.

Though, the article did say they had to pay for the IVF. Which is likely the most expensive part of this.

Still Gwen, I hope you can someday get tested, so you can have some peace of mind.

Also, what did everyone miss about the husband?

We all just need to hang in there.

Considering the amount of money that can be made, and the number of old rich people there are out there, life extending technology will be available just as soon as the researchers figure a few things out -- and technology is rushing along at a breakneck pace.

Most of us here are quite likely to live in a time when the body we wear is a matter of personal choice, and we will change bodies as readily as we change cars.

Hang in there. In a few years, you will have the body that you want -- now, and a thousand years in the future.
