I am wondering what you all thought of this particular episode of Oprah, and how it treated both the subject of Gender Dysphoria and the Pregnancy of a Thomas? I ask these questions both for myself and others who may come to this site. I for one am a nontransgender person. But I enjoy my pitiful writing, both in content and technique. And the comment made by Thomas, about how the community has over all treated him. Please Respond. I ask that you do put it in the main area below, But I understand if you can only do it privately. Thanks.

I dragged the t.v. out and watched it. I wouldn't really have any comment, except that you asked for one. It was a fairly typical Oprah show. About as tasteful as you will get on daytime tv, Oprah didn't commit any faux pas, the guy came off as smart, articulate, and if self-promoting (raise some bucks toward raising a child by plugging his forthcoming book) not OVERLY so; they seemed like a sweet couple; the audience looked generally sympathetic; the ob-gyn doctor they finally wound up with a nice lady; the one neighbor couple they interviewed seemed more understanding than some of the ones quoted on newscasts earlier; a girl in the audience showed her boobs---which they pixelled out---and got some beads for it (oh wait, that was the show I watched just before)..... In the long run I think it's a good thing for the LGBT community(s) that they did this ........ Only now I'm back on the evil tube, and I'm gonna watch the show about horrible inhumane PUPPY MILLS tomorrow, and I know I'll cry myself sick!
~~~hugs, LAIKA
PS: Perhaps it's not relevant to anything, but this real life pregnant-husband scenario keeps reminding me of Darla Raspberry's young couple in the latter part of her (sigh) unfinished trilogy.
I thought that the show was fairly balanced overall in the way the topic was treated. Personally I'm happy for Thomas and his wife that they are able to have this child. As an MTF just starting transition, I know that having a child of my own is something that I will never be able to experience, but do strongly wish that I could. However, Thomas and his wife give me hope in the knowledge that other possibilities do exist. I plan to preserve some of my sperm before HRT renders me sterile. So if I should ever be lucky enough to find a willing GG or FTM life partner, someday we might be able to have our own genetic child. I know that this is a long shot and may never happen, but thanks to Thomas at least I can hope that one day my dream could become reality.
I looked at Oprah’s web site to see what kind of comments were left in response to the show and sadly most so far are very negative. A large number were left by people who didn’t even bother to actually watch the show and who were summarily passing judgment out of obvious ignorance, intolerance and just plain old bigotry! Common comments were statements like: “If God had wanted Thomas to be a man, he would have been born a man”, “God doesn’t make mistakes”, “Thomas is just a woman pretending to be a man”. It just goes to show just how much work is still needed to educate the public about what being transgendered is truly about.
the pregnant man or is that woman?
As someone who identifys as Ts I question the transexual man title somewhat.It seems Ftm's have differing views on what constitutes a transexual from someone who is simply transgender.I believe that the confusion the term transgender creates has had a detrimental effect for the true transexual.That said it doesn't mean I'm against transgender rights as we're all the gay communitys outcasts.What I want to see is a female to male that can get a woman pregnant and a male to female that can get pregnant.Amy
