I think mom and dad might have been in US diplomatic service.
after son recovers enough aunt and uncle take him in and back to US, however he is left with parents house and contents.

yes you guess right he begins to spend time at 'home' and because of injuries starts to dress in mothers clothes.
goes to local coffee bar while dressed, begins double life pretending to be European college exchange student,

uncle may be in CIA or similar alphabet agency.
