Making your Prose into HTML on a Mac made easy!

Printer-friendly version

I don't know if this will be of any use for people, but it's made things easy for me. So, I thought I'd pass this on.

I use Scrivener to write my prose. But, this method will work with any decent word processor for Mac.

This does require going into the Preferences for TextEdit, going to the Open and Save tab and make sure your Document Type is HTML 4.01 Strict. This is a One Time Thing.

After which, everything is done in these steps.

  • Write your prose.
  • Copy and paste your prose into a blank TextEdit document.
  • Save your TextEdit document as an HTML document.
  • Open your new HTML document in your favorite web browser and View Source.
  • Copy Everything from body to /body and paste into the Body blank of the Add a Story page here at BC.

Drupal will do the rest. Yay!

Does that work in 'Pages' too?

'Pages' allows saving as HTML as well, wouldn't that work as well or better than the less powerful 'TextEdit'?

I've just found that using the 4.01 Strict in TextEdit makes nice, simple, very standards compliant HTML.

I'm not a Pages fan, but if it's doing what you need, that's cool with me. :) I need something like this because of Scrivener. I really love that little piece of software.

If I recall correctly, the holdup was with certain APIs that Apple hasn't allowed access to outside developers yet. Hopefully that will change with the SDKs for iOS 8.

Edit: Oh, check the forums. Much more info there.
