Today, I watched Godzilla in theater.

I want to make it very clear that I liked Godzilla. It was much better than the one with Broderick in it. It was also superior to the last Japan produced one I saw which I believe is titled Godzilla 2000. Overall, it was good.

Except for a few things. These things almost broke the movie for me. I felt like they seriously dropped the ball. All it would have taken is looking at google maps and wikipedia to not mess up.

Major flaws I found that just should not have been in the movie:

The first was Yucca Mountain. It's an actual mountain at 6707 ft from base to peak. A sizable mountain. Much larger than depicted in the movie. This would have been easy to CG, but the mountain is so small.

You cannot see Las Vegas from Yucca Mountain. Even if you stood on the peak of Yucca mountain this is impossible. Google map this, and you'll see there are many mountains in the way. This is the area I grew up. I'm from Vegas. Family lives in Indian Springs and Pahrump. I've been to the valley that Yucca Mountain is at the edge of. It was for a field trip in high school for my Astronomy/Geology course. The field trip was a visit to a mine on the other side of the valley. You can't even see the nearest town, which is Beaty, from Yucca Mountain. Millions were spent on this and the writers and producers couldn't even be bothered to check this out.

Yucca mountain is to the northwest of Vegas. The Muto would have headed West for either a meetup with her mate, or to find the single nuke being transported. She should not have headed southwest.

Yucca Mountain as seen in the movie is full of radioactive material that the Female Muto would have consumed and eaten. As evidenced in the scene where squads moving through the Yucca Mountain Facility looking for the female Muto, they could see that the spent nuclear fuel was still intact. This material is still radioactive. It's buried in a mountain because it's radioactive. For some reason the female Muto abandoned a prime food source right next to her.

So the female muto:

  • left a perfectly good place to nest
  • left a perfectly good food source
  • went in the wrong direction to meet up with her mate
  • chased after a relatively tiny food source

What should have happened:

  • The female muto should have stayed at Yucca Mountain.
  • Used the spent nuclear fuel rods and other nuclear waste materials as food
  • Let the male muto come to her at the nest

The majority of nuclear material in the US is to the east considering geographical area, and nuclear power stations are spread throughout. This is the only thing that could possibly be stretched to justify the female Muto going southeast to Vegas... except the nuclear material there in Yucca Mountain which she abandoned.

But that would have been boring and not as much shock and awe.

Don't even get me started on how bad the use of EMP was done, or even why monsters would even have the capability to EMP.

Raymond Burr

I did not read post, don't want any spoilers. That being said, two words Raymond Burr.

Best version

Its the best version and all. More emphasis on acting than on graphics.

IIRC the elevation of the peak is as stated but the surrounding topography is much higher than sea level so the relief from base to peak is actually much less than that. It's a rather unimpressive mountain.

I haven't seen the movie so I can't comment on it.
