The Future of BigCloset -- We Are Janglewood LLC

Printer-friendly version

We Are Janglewood LLC

As of last week, Piper, Cat and I have incorporated as Janglewood, LLC.

Janglewood LLC

This is mostly to keep the taxman happy but it offers some advantages, too. We are not a non-profit, at least, not yet. We may do that next year but that's a whole 'nother kitten tangled up in a ball of string.

We're moving the servers to a new COLO where we are also installing the new servers. This will increase our monthly expenses by about $500 bucks because cheap COLOs are pretty much non-existent anymore (thank you, BitCoin miners) . We couldn't install our new more powerful servers in our old COLO for less than an added $450+ a month so we are going with a new place close enough that Piper can drive there to do installs and such.

Anyway, we are getting ready to install, configure and turn on the new servers. This should improve our service immensely but we have already spent in excess of $5000 in the last 40 days or so. We need some gifts, either via The Hatbox in the left column or through our new Pay Pal box on our new Janglewood Page.

You should be seeing a faster, more reliable BigCloset within a week or less.

Anything you can give will be appreciated. And if you can't, we understand that, too.

Thanks.

Hugs,
Erin, Piper and Cat

Qnez

I thought you were already incorporated as Qnez, but I guess I was wrong.

Janglewood, LLC dba QnEZ

Never officially incorporated as QnEZ, it was being run as a Sole Proprietorship. We are currently Janglewood, LLC DBA (Doing Business As) QnEZ

Hmmmm.....

Andrea Lena's picture

You got sites that jingle jangle jingle as we go writing merrily along.... Jeanine Autry, 1943

To be alive is to be vulnerable. Madeleine L'Engle
Love, Andrea Lena

Yup

erin's picture

That song did influence the name but I think Autry only performed it, the songwriters were Lilley and Loesser and they wrote it for some movie where it was performed by Dick Thomas, one of the original Jewish singing cowboys. :)

I had the Fess Parker/Bill

I had the Fess Parker/Bill Hayes song - Wringle Wrangle - run through my head when I saw the name.

I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.

Sort of three things... and naming the servers

erin's picture

Tanglewood Tales by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Bob Dylan's song Mr. Tambourine Man and the song Andrea referred to above. We needed a name that no one else was using and that wasn't associated with any of the things we were currently doing or planning.

BTW, the new servers are going to be named either April, May and June after Daisy Duck's nieces or Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup after the Whoopass, er, Powerpuff Girls. :)

Anyone want to express a preference for the names? :)

All three servers are in one box which we have named Cerberus (or C3X for short) and the box will be in the cabinet we are renting which we have named Kaos after Agent 86's favorite enemy. :)

We also have two switches and another server needing names.

Erin

All those were on the list and considered

erin's picture

Groucho, Chico and Harpo were front runners for a bit. Especially since we might have needed four or five names. Jim, Bones and Spock were also considered. :)

Bob named his servers after stars, constellations and rockets. We haven't been quite as consistent.

How about

Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice? :-)

I went outside once. The graphics weren' that great.

LOL

and LOL again

sever names should

wolfjess7's picture

A servers name should always reflect the presonallity of it owners. I think they should fallow though with the Greek thyme but instead of the muses' maybe the Goddess themselves. That way you know wich Goddess to blaim when the deffication makes contact with the rotating air ossolater.

May the peace and happiness of the Goddess keep and protect you
as always your humble outlaw
Jessie Wolf

When already going with

When already going with Cerberus. why not name them Calliope, Melpomene, and Thaleia? Three of the muses from greek mythology.

For completeness sake, these are the 9 known muses. As you might well know already :)

Erato ( Muse of the hymne, song and lyric )
Euterpe ( Muse of playing the flute. At the time a highly appreciated instrument )
Calliope ( Muse of the heroïc epos, philosophy and rethorics )
Clio ( Muse van de geschiedschrijving)
Melpomene ( Muse of tragedy )
Polyhymnia ( Muse of rethorics and hymnes )
Terpsichore ( Muse of dance and lyrical poetry )
Thaleia ( Muse of comedy)
Ourania ( Muse of astronomy )

But imho the three proposed names cover the scope of BCTS most adroitly. And you can add more servers easily.

I will try to keep supporting of course, Much thanks and regards for doing this herculean task for so long already.

Jo-Anne

I was thinking

I was thinking about Huey, Dewey and Screwy. Think about it.

which we have named Kaos

which we have named Kaos after Agent 86's favorite enemy. :)

We also have two switches and another server needing names.

Ninety-nine, Forty-two and Twenty-three?

April, as in April Dancer? That'd make the other two Honey as in West and Modesty as in Blaise...

Server Names

How about naming them after my three favorite servers: Jimmy, John, and Chris. (Connors, McEnroe, and Evert.)

I just sent you $100 through Hatbox.

Stay happy.

I'm baffled.

The Janglewood home page asks for my user name and password but when I typed in my big closet details, ... no go.

Help.

Hmm

erin's picture

There is no login there except for admin, at the moment there is no content, really, except what you see on the front page. We haven't set it up to share BC's logins and I'm not sure how easy that would be to do because it is running D7 and BC runs D6. We'll worry about that when we get everything up and running. :)

I will continue to contribute

There are certainly some good legal reasons to incorporate; that was a very wise move.

I hope the continuing approach of owning physical servers and COLOing them works for the best. I've always wondered if using a hosting service might really be cheaper in the long term with less hassle for you all (in terms of repairing and replacing servers). But, it's your sandbox!

I will continue to contribute.

Kris

{I leave a trail of Kudos as I browse the site. Be careful where you step!}

Power

erin's picture

The problem with renting a server is renting one as powerful as we need would run about 500 a month for one server. It just isn't economic.

What's also a headache is

What's also a headache is that if you decide to upgrade hardware, it's a nightmare to schedule with the colo, and they can charge through the wazoo for it. It's often cheaper to go to a new server completely, rather than do an upgrade. That then requires that you pay for two servers at the same time for at least a month, so you can build the new one, then take down the old long enough to do a full data sync.

I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.

Colo Upgrades are Easier

Piper's picture

we'll have 24hrs access to colo with at leasst 15min notice and proper identification.

Scranton, PA

erin's picture

Piper is still at the COLO facility in Scranton waiting to be allowed to install our equipment. She's been there since Monday afternoon and it looks like she will be there thru tomorrow. This is costing us money for hotel and meals and gas. It's complicated.

Remember that you can send us a gift to help us meet expense either through the Hatbox in the right hand column here, or thru our Pa_Pal box at http://janglewood.com. And thanks.

Hugs,
Erin

Gee, I see a lot of names.....

In the right hand column. Maybe you could pick from there? Maybe even the names in Memoriam? Just a thought. I'll be sending what I can again in a day or two (a hundred or two). Loving Hugs Talia

Creating Janglewood LLC also

Creating Janglewood LLC also protects Erin, Piper and Cat against lawsuits, or at least should. Be sure to keep your financials separate.

It also provides that Janglewood can survive...

...if something happens to me. I've been doing this for 15 years but we all know I won't be able to do it forever.

So, when writing a check..

Wendy Jean's picture

Who do we make it out to? Same as previous?

Still looking for a job, but I do try to contribute when I can.

For the moment...

erin's picture

You can continue writing your checks payable to me. We will have a bank account in the name of Janglewood soon, though and then be able to accept checks in that name. Even after that, though, checks made payable to me will be able to be deposited in the Janglewood account.

Erin

Thank you for your effort

I know I do not post very often, I am a lousy writer. That does not mean I am not an avid reader and enjoy everything that is posted here.

I want to thank you for your continuous effort in maintaining all your sites, I have send you my little grain of sand and hope it helps.

In regards of the names I love the April, May and June idea and for the others how about Summer and Autumn :-)

Thank You Again and Best Regardsgothic.jpg

Thank you

Thank you for all your hard work! Will donate when I can.

So for those of us who make less than minimum wages...

... I gotta ask, is like five dollars even worth it for ya'll, or would the financial institutions and various overheads make it worthless for you, and then would it even be enough to help with anything? And here's an idea I JUST had; what about setting up a torrent like system to load balance the bandwidth consumption? Cause I've got a wee bit of bandwidth (standard asynch cable) that I could 'donate' or something if there were a way to offset some of the load/cost. Load balancing virtual machines? Anywhos, g'night.

if everyone gave 5 dollars

I would think any gift would be appreciated. If everyone who visited and enjoyed the site all gave 5 dollars at once, Erin could probably buy her own island and keep the servers running there.
