Mothering Sunday is NOT the same thing as Mothers' Day. It falls every year on the fourth Sunday of Lent and is a Church of England festival. Originally it was the day when the nobility allowed their servants to go and visit their mothers, taking a small posy as a gift.
Nowadays, of course it doesn't apply the same way, but our children are urged to send a card, or give a small gift, or do a good deed for their mums. Needless to say it has been hijacked by commercial interests which have decided to equate it with Mothers' Day in the US, which I believe is celebrated in May.
I got a lovely surprise this morning. My darling daughter brought me breakfast in bed at a quarter to eight; a lightly boiled egg, wholemeal toast, butter and marmalade and a pot of my favourite Darjeeling tea. So thoughtful for Mothering Sunday, and then at church all the children were asked to go up to the front to get a small posy of spring flowers to give their mums. It was very touching.
It has been a lovely day with even a bit of sunshine.
