So on Black Friday I bought myself a Prius. It was silver. Now it's denty. I hit a deer. Bumper no long bumps, hood no longer covers engine, radiator bleeding some weird red liquid. My neck and back hurt. No airbags deployed. Geico needs me to get a police report and I don't know who to contact for the Florida Highway Patrol. Not happy.
For animal lovers: The deer lived, but I hope it gets eaten by a hungry rabbit.

The cat that nearly killed me and certainly changed my life profoundly was described by a lawyer as "a cat of straw". I guess the deer is in the same legal category :)
I hope you had comprehensive insurance and your neck problems are truly temporary.

Last Thursday while driving across the Pocono Mountains in northeastern Pennsylvania on my way home from a business trip, I had a similar circumstance. I was driving eastbound on I-84 about midway between Scranton, PA and the New York state line on my way home to my humble abode just outside of Saratoga Springs, NY.
There I am, minding my own business - well, OK, I did have the cruise control set at 75 in a 65 zone, but I was still minding my own business!
So, as I begin to pass a black Hyundai Azera on the left, three deer run out onto the highway in front of the Hyundai. The driver of the Hyundai reacts by moving left into my lane to avoid the deer, thus forcing me onto the shoulder in order to avoid his car. Yes, "his car" - nice looking young man from what I remember of him underneath the panicked expression I saw on his face as he realized he had almost hit me.
Unfortunately, I-84 does not have wide shoulders, and the left rear tire of my Caddy dropped off onto the softer portion of the shoulder - with the inevitable result of the car wanting to come around and slide off the road.
Well, thanks to Cadillac's wonderful engineering job, all-wheel drive, the judicious application of a lot of power, and a lot of experience driving on really bad roads and in bad weather, I managed to pull my pretty little Caddy back onto the road. Unfortunately, not before I felt a slight bump from the left rear though.
So, while the cute young man in the Hyundai continued on down the highway without stopping, and the mangy deer ran back into the woods to have multiple heart attacks (I hope!), I pulled off the highway a few hundred yards further up the road. Upon getting out, I found that the left rear quarter panel had lightly brushed up against the guard rail from the wheel well back to the tail end - about 18 inches of lightly scraped fender.
So my pretty little Black Cherry CTS-4 gets to spend a few days in the body shop next week and I get to foot the cost to the tune of about $500 getting the paint matched properly. Thankfully I know a very good body man, so I know it will look like new when he is done, but I will still know it's there.
As for the young man in the Hyundai, well, thanks for stopping asshole. If we ever meet again........

Deer are pretty dangerous animals
I hit one a few years ago. It leaped over a hedge right in front of me. I didn't have the luxury of a metal skin all around me a.k.a a car. I was on my Motorcycle. The result was £1500.00 worth or damage to the bike and a dislocated shoulder for me. I was lucky that is was only a fallow deer. A larger species could have been a lot more iffy. I know someone who was killed in his Land Rover when the antlers went throuth the winscreen and punctured his chest.
Thank your lucky stars that the car took most of the impact rather than you.

I once had a car for three days before a gal smashed the rear driver's side door. Sucks worse when it's a new car.
Also son and i were driving home with a car. Not 3 minutes after I told him to back down the speed (i let him open the taps and we were doing in excess of 120!) a deer darted into the road. It started one way - son swerved. It changed directions- son countered. Couldn't have missed the deer by more than six inches - and i knew my old reflexes couldn't avoid the accident.
Worse than a deer is hitting a hog. They have no give at all.
Get checked up on that head/neck pain. I had one decades ago, ignored it, and now have big problems.

I have a friend that hit an alligator a few years back. It really did some serious damage to the front bumper, grill and undercarriage. Her insurance agent was up north and had a hard time understanding that alligators like to sun themselves in the middle of the road sometimes here in Florida. It took that police report and several phone calls to finally get them to authorize payment.
Just call *FHP on your cell phone and ask for the Troop/office that covers the area where the accident happened. Ask them to have the report ready and head on over there for a copy of it.
I used to work for the FHP and it's done every day. Each Troop covers 2 counties, usually.
