I was re-reading Maddy Bell's GABY series, and again came across a reference to Marmite,
a food paste which is manufactured in Britain.
Being something of an anglophile, and having, over the years, seen many references to this product,
I was inspired to locate and purchase a sample.
I understand that the company's slogan is "love it or hate it".
Unfortunately, I found that I did indeed hate it.
But you British need not despair, I absolutely love roast beef.

I have an example of every modern jar that has been sold recently --- that makes a total of 8. (Yes, I know it's a marketing ploy, but what the hey?)
I didn't like the Champagne added one they produced for St. Valentine's day a few years back, but the Guiness infused one is good, as is the Marston's Pedigree (a beer) infused one.
The XO version though is truly excellent.
I have 2 or 3 pieces of bread or toast and Marmite every day for breakfast.
I do hope that you were told to spread it thinly? If it was too thick, then I can imagine that it would be unpleasant.
The Australians have a problem, because a company down there (In New Zealand, actually) got the rights for Australasia and then they ALTERED the composition, adding caramel to it. So what is sold as Marmite down there, is, quite frankly, disgusting.
So the Aussies came up with something similar that they call Vegemite.
I find it pale and insipid, without the depths of flavour of Brit Marmite, but definitely better than the NZ-produced Marmite.
That said, I shall get off my hobby-horse, and go and put away my Marmite toast rack, next to my Marmite tea-pot and my Marmite egg cups, then I shall have a coffee in my Marmite coffee mug.

Marmite is a bit of an
Marmite is a bit of an acquired taste. It's also proof of the concept that if a little bit is good, more is not necessarily better. Marmite works best when spread as thinly as possible.
Scrambled eggs on toast
Scrambled eggs on toast spread with a thin layer of marmite. This will make converts.
It's brilliant and I have some in the house.
Take a bit of roast beef, some cooked brown onions and some of the roast liquid and Marmite and HP sauce and mix it all together to dress the meat...perfect roast beef sandwich.
Also paint a little on a steak with lots of fresh ground black pepper and garlic for a killer marinade.
Actually even though it's nowhere close to the same thing I've heard it called English-Miso paste.

I sincerely hope you eat it with Yorkshire pudding and lashings of thick onion gravy.
I've never been to the US, but I have no doubt that if I was asked at immigration what I was most looking forward to I'd say the food. Everyone I've spoken to has been amazed by the quality, the size of the portions and how reasonably priced it is.
Having said that, I'd still yearn for a decent meat pie. A pork pie straight from the oven in a village butcher's, without any of that disgusting aspic jelly. A meat and potato pie from Lancashire or Cumbria. A beef and ale pie. And unless you've tasted a balti pie you haven't lived.
Back on topic: crusty bread, salted Danish butter, a thin layer of marmite, Iceberg lettuce and plain or ready salted crisps. Fold and munch.

Marmite on toast... mmmmmmmmmmmmmm! :)
They also sell it in squeezy plastic 'jars' which is rather convenient, especially when you get near the end - no more scraping your knife around the innards of the jar trying to locate the last bits of the paste. On the plus side, it's stuffed full of B vitamins. On the minus side, it's also stuffed full of salt (hence another good reason to go steady with it rather than ladling it on!)

Marmite!
It's brown and gooey and looks like sh!t, tastes and smells horrible and burns your mouth. Disgusting stuff. Bovril is much nicer now they reverted to its original flavour.

When I first spotted the topic of this Blog this was the image that came to mind. Later when I read the full drift of it not just the topic, I laughed at my self for a long time. Yes my miss spelling can make for some fun

Marmots are large ground squirrels in the genus Marmota tend to live in mountainous areas, such as the Alps, northern Apennines, Eurasian steppes, Carpathians, Tatras, and Pyrenees in Europe and northwestern Asia; the Rocky Mountains, Black Hills, Cascades, and Sierra Nevada in North America; and the Deosai Plateau in Pakistan and Ladakh in India, They are related to Ground hogs or whistle pigs but the ones in the Rocky mountains put on a white coat for the winter.
