I have a vet appointment for our two 18+ year old cats today.
The girl, Cally hid in the basement over night.
She is so frail and does not appear to be eating much.
Mind you we did have a painting crew working outside all day and maybe she was stressed.
But also has had gunk drying on her nose and near an eye.
Her brother Rusty is better but also has had odd breathing sounds at times as has she.
Allergies? My sister was feeling that a few days back. Heart trouble?
We know both have moderate kidney disease and she has a heart murmur she gets a special weak aspirin solution for.
I fear it may be the end for her.
Like losing a child.
What hurts even more is dad is 86...
At least her is in better shape but still.
Remember and love them. They pass all too quickly.

I understand the pain you are feeling. At 18 your kitty has lead a full and happy life. Sometimes the kindest thing is to let them go, no matter how much it hurts us. I'm crying for you now, I know how much it hurts. Take care, my friend. *Hugs*

We Will Never Forget Them
Over the last 40 plus years we've had many feline companions. Several of them were with us close to 20 years. It was heartbreaking to lose each of them, including "The Cat From Hell". I have literally cried at the veterinarian's office as I said farewell. It won't get any easier.
We have two five year olds right now, a brother and sister. They get a bit contankerous with each other. He is usually the aggressor. He must have done something to her the other day as when I came home, I found him lying on the floor with his belly looking like he'd been partially skinned. It took about 30 staples to close the four wounds. He must have really pissed her off, and she fought back. Things seem to be getting better in the relationship department. She still hisses at him if he gets too close, but things are a lot calmer. They nap far apart. He likes the top of the book case or entertainment cabinet. She retreats to our bedroom or other dark places, but they are being more civil. You gotta love them.

It is always hard to loose
our non-human children. I would always get another though, the joy and pleasure they offer makes up for the loss at the end, and we do our best to give them a good life, which they may not of had otherwise. I am one of those people that love both cats and dogs, and all of my companions have been good friends with each other. It is great fun to watch them tease each other in their own special way.
Remember the good times, and may their passing be gentle.
I feel your pain!
It was not too long ago that our cat of 14 years, suffering from cancer, crawled downstairs to hide and die. But the pain was too much and we found him by his cries. Very reluctantly we took him to the Humane Society and ended his suffering. He was the smartest cat we ever had, even knowing that the door knobs opened doors and figuring out how to open our back screen door to get outside.
It wasn't easy, even knowing the pain he was in, but his passing was peaceful. I've never regretted helping him.
John, I hope you can come to the best possible resolution.
