Hey everyone! I'm working on a MAU story that I want to take in a slightly different direction. In this case I have a question for you SF Fans out there in Big-Closet Land!
What gadget from from SF movies, TV, other media would you try to use a MAU to create?
For me, the Sonic Screwdriver or at least a version of it was a must. Also a Star Trek tricorder would be a great accessory tool to go with it. Any other suggestions?
Remember this is limited by Elrod's rules on MAU's so it has to operate by scientific principles. No magic please!

The largest Canon (not
The largest Canon (not cannon! That implies that they exited from the MAU with explosive force) character that I can recall is one of the Klingons from the 7of9 strip(s).
That's still pretty darned big - I'd assume 7 feet tall, and proportionally wide at the shoulders.
Most of what we've seen fits in normal human range.
I guess one of the better ideas would be KISS. Moderate ability to shapeshift (male to female, for example - but slowly, with no real cheating with mass), skinsuit, a-la L. Neil Smith, and perfect regeneration - and possibly the ability to 'infect' someone else with one-time regeneration. (You could do it more than once, but it wouldn't be a continual regeneration like you would have)
I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.
if your protagonist
has friends, the star trek comm badge, maybe as a ring or bracelet instead as a easily lost/stolen pin. a world wide voice activated comm thats secure. a hand phaser is a must, maybe with biometrics to allow it to reset to stun if out of their hands.
Several devices...
Several devices come to mind. NO idea if they fit the rules, but there is the scientific technobabble to describe them...
1) Skinsuit - a thin/flexible/body covering suit that protects you in most environments (from vacuum to...). Not a radiation suit or designed to protect one from fire in most literature, but those kind of things could be designed in.
2) Personal Anti-gravity or lifting devices - These come in all shapes and sizes. Some simply act as gravity nullifiers (to greater/lesser degrees. I've read of some that were just parachutes. Some that would let you go up/down but at the mercy of the wind, and some that let you actually fly. Spock used a pair of boots to fly & catch Kirk in one of the movies, if memory serves. In David Weber's Harrington novels, it was a back pack.
3) Psionic Amplifier - device to amplify what native psionic abilities a person might have.
4) Psionic shield - protect one's mind from telepathy.
5) Regeneration Baths - things you are immersed in (partially or completely) which allow the body to regenerate lost limbs/skin/etc.
6) Holography - personal hologram projector (the Doctor on Star Trek: Voyager comes to mind)... You can create a hologram that can "intelligently" interact with the world around it. Or the Holodeck from Star Trek: The Next Generation.
etc.
The list is all but endless. If you can think of something you want a device to do, there's a decent chance someone's thought of at least one way it could be done in science fiction literature. (If you can't find it, I can probably make it up if I've not read it somewhere.)
Hm... I might turn myself
Hm... I might turn myself into a von Neumann machine and take over the universe :D
Seriously though, somekind of replicator would probably be a smart idea. And somekind of power source... hm... a vacuum energy tap? Although that sounds like an unlimited energy cheat. More magic than real. On the other hand the MAU needs to be powered somehow. So it should be able to produce something like that.
Energy and Replication ability would be awesome. The rest... well you can do the rest with that. Sleethr kinda impressioned you?
CYBERNETICS.
By utilising cybernetics in my SRS, I could have have a vagina with an adjustable wetness level. I'd be relatively dry when (or should that be "if"?) I wasn't getting fucked, and via a direct neural link I could make myself super wet in an instant. = )
My Seme would have a detachable cybernetic package in front of their vagina, s/he would keep it in place for regular fucking and remove it for tribbing and scissoring. ^_^
A translator
for the MAU script.
While you are about it, how about a complete alien education in MAU technology, if a brainpower increase is needed that should be doable. Of course, the aliens may abduct you before you ruin all their fun.
It has to be the alien human replicator device.......
........from the 1996 move - THE ARRIVAL - Charlie Sheen plays a radio astronomer who picks up alien transmission, except it's from Earth. His Boss is actually an alien and it's a great movie... The aliens possess a device that creates the external appearance of humans - male and female, over the alien's real appearance. Charlie infiltrates the base and uses the machine to look like another human.. one of their limited stock of images.
I often wondered what would have happened if he'd wrongly programmed it and he got a female body by mistake.

There's no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes!
What about one of those
What about one of those flashy things from MIB? you could use it on the MAU universes MIB people, oh the irony. :P
A universal translator for human languages (It's canon that you can't translate the MAU's language), If it's shaped like a fish and goes in your ear that's a bonus.
What about a super search engine? something that will troll through the internet and find the answers to your questions, and pretty much anything else you could imagine being done with the internet.
There is also a personal clocking devise, hopefully your character is out of high school or we know where he will use it to spy on.
I remember a short story by someone, Asimov I think about a devise that allowed you to look into the past. It could let you see from any point at any time in the world. In the story they were highly regulated, so regulated in fact that no one got to use them. the main character (someone who desperately wants to study an ancient civilization) ends up finding a way to build a easy to make one and releasing the blueprints to everyone in the world. Of course then the truth comes out, it only lets you see about 50 years into the past and the reason that they were so controlled, and something the main character didn't think of, is that everyone could now spy on everyone else with no way to stop them. No one was going to have privacy anymore.
If your character ever wanted to know what really happened that might be something he would get.
If your still looking for ideas here is a website you might go to. it has a list of almost every scifi invention ever thought up. http://www.technovelgy.com/ct/ctnlistalpha.asp
I mean really it has about a hundred things listed on the first page and it's not even through with the As.
I know if I ever found a MAU it would first ask for it to download its instruction manual and list of available features into my brain. None of this trying to think up what it could do for me, I would know every cool thing it could do. Then it's you just have to see how many enhancements you can load on yourself before the MAU starts to over heat.
maybe I am greedy
walk in with 50 pounds (22.5 kg.) of lead and a bag of coal, and walk out with gold and diamonds? :P
I was checking on expensive
I was checking on expensive materials, and you really would not the most expensive, and I don't think a MAU would make it. It's Antimatter and 50 lbs of it would make a big boom.
I doubt it would make 2 and 4 either as they are radioactive.
3 is Diamond, 5 is Taaffeite and 6 Painite both rarer than diamonds.
7 is plutonium, I think the various governments of the world would object to you making 50 lbs of it, and that much might just go boom on you.
8,9,10, and 12 are illegal drugs, and 11 is Rhino horn, have fun explaining where you got the rhino horn.
13, 14 and 15 are Platinum, Rhodium, and gold.
16 is Saffron.
This list is from late 2011.
I'd stick with carrying in
I'd stick with carrying in carbon and coming out with diamonds. Don't bother with coal, just haul in charcoal - it's easier to get ahold of.
Gold would require a lot more energy manipulation.
I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.
I want to fly
A jetpack of some sort, Boba Fett's, Rocketeer's, Flash Gordon's - doesn't matter.
Universal Translator
How about that small device called the "Universal Translator"... Ever so useful... And, of course, it never mangles translations... :-)

The CPS suit from the TV show
The CPS suit from the TV show Continuum. A bullet-proof supercomputer that changes color, has a taser, can generate a short-term magnetic (force) field, turn the user invisible, has various scanners, cell phone internet, etc., etc.
Why not the space suit from
Why not the space suit from Super Force?

Good ideas
I'm using parts of the Super Force suit and the CPS uniform for inspiration. :) Of course good ideas doesn't a story make and turning wish fulfillment into an enjoyable story is a challenged, but at least I have a start.
I just had this funny image of a customer asking for all of this stuff and then falling out of the MAU Booth bombarded by all the stuff like an overfilled closet! :)
Thanks everyone!

In the book "Expecting
In the book "Expecting Someone Taller", the main character, Malcolm has the ring of the Nibelung, which when he rubs it on his nose, gives him gold. The thing is, it tends to come down on top of him in the shape of cups, plates, etc.
PS. The closet was from "Fibber McGee and Molly", and always had a bowling ball on the top shelf.
