In Word, I save the document as "Web Page Filtered"

Then I open the htm file in Notepad and copy and paste it here on BC

Down at the bottom of the screen I click on "Input Select" and change it to "Filtered HTML w/o Line Breaks" (The 3rd choice down).

That usually keeps all my formatting and displays correctly.

The publishing system used by BC is a compromise between usability for people who don't want to fiddle with HTML and people who are quite comfortable. Because of this, line breaks are handled differently than they are in true HTML and completely differently than they are in MS Word, because MS Word uses a type of internal "stylesheet" that fiddles with the display and translates that into embedded HTML stylesheets when you use it to output "HTML."

Unfortunately, BC doesn't support full HTML with CSS Stylesheets, because BC itself uses CSS stylesheets to format its pages, and it's astonishingly easy for random stylesheet modifiers to wind up breaking the "look and feel" of BC pages. (What, you thought it was magic that every story has a common appearance on the page?)

So when you combine MS Word pigheadedness and (necessary) BC intransigence, one often sees problems, not least of which is that MS Word generates incredibly ugly and verbose HTML code which is very prone to be susceptible to internal errors if one later tries to edit the outputted code.

As Sephrena pointed out, Notepad (and textedit on the Mac) produce cleaner HTML which can be more easily dealt with after the fact.
