Recently I've been getting an ad here on Big Closet for Kindle Buffet, indicating it has some free ebooks for the Kindle.

It is not kidding. It had around 30 of Amazon's books listed, and they are priced at $0.00

I was not interested in most of them, but found several and had them downloaded to my Kindle, which means I can also read them on my computers.

The site isn't bogus, the purchases were made through Amazon. I've bookmarked the site. I don't know how often they change the offerings, (UPDATE, They have new offerings daily, for one day before they go back to the regular price. Most I am not interested in, but some of you may, and I have found something every day.), and right now, none of the books are TG, but severl are within genres seen here beyond the TG flavors

One doesn't actually need a Kindle...

...since there are Kindle "apps" for most operating systems, the iPhone, iPad, and many other devices.

If you have an Amazon account, you can also save most Kindle titles to the Amazon "cloud," where you can read the books using any web browser.

If you look on the Amazon web site, you'll see lists of Kindle "best sellers," which feature a hundred paid titles and a hundred free titles in several different genres in parallel columns.

Of course, there are also the Gutenberg.org and other free sites which produce Kindle and ePub (Apple and other reader formats) gratis.

You might also check out the ereaderiq.com mailing list, which keeps track of every free Kindle title and organises them by category, so if you like SF, Romance, Historical, Supernatural, or any of many other categories, you'll get an email delivered to your inbox every day with a list of titles available gratis from Amazon. The site also allows one to perform custom searches, so if you're looking for titles in any category they track, which is essentially the Amazon "tags," you can find those too. It's quite easy (if somewhat time-consuming, since you have to do it one at a time) to accumulate ten- to twenty-thousand free titles with the click of a few buttons.

Oh, believe me, I am aware of

Oh, believe me, I am aware of Gutenburg, where I've been getting stories and novels for around 10 years. I've even proofed a number of their OCR'd stories for them.

And I have Kindle for PC on my computers.

And yes, I know about the regular free stories available on Amazon, though I wish they would separate out the novels, instead of providing such as "The works of H Beam Piper" 32 stories/novels & "The Best of H. Beam Piper", the same 32 stories plus one additional on in the Best Of. It's not just that I hate to be hornswoggled into buying both, but that Once 'bought', even for free, I can't completely dump them completely.
Even more importantly, it is not easy to find the story I want in it if they do not provide a link from an index at the front.

But that has little to do with the free books.

The ones on Kindle Buffet, appear to be one day only, then go back to the regular price, Today's list was entirely different than yesterday's. So they probably won't show up on hte site you mentioned. You may remember that Tanya Allen and at least one other author have had their books available for one day.

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

Free books

The site has an strange collection of books, and they mostly have very good reviews. But the price is right for them. The odds are good that you may like some of them.

As noted, the links are to the Amazon site, so they are safe to use (ignoring what personal data Amazon always is assembling.) I had no problem seeing them on my PC and Kindle. I personally prefer to read on the PC's larger screen whan at home.
