the shop
Lil Jaci daughter of Clodbeard, he wasn't that well known don't ask, was browsing the wares of the shop with her longtime friend Dottie.
"What do you think Dottie. Does this cultass make me look fat?"
Like a pirate? Hmmmmmm...
...I've got twenty-eight percent of the shares already, and between that and your eighteen percent plus acting as proxy for my grandmother, we should be able to wrap up this deal in time for lunch. They'll never know what hit them!

Well I rate apple and blackbery over apple alone with cherry a close third and apricot just outside the medals. Plum and pinapple are better in crumbles where both are still outdone by apple and blackberry and even that comes second to rhubarb. Blackcurrent? depends on the season but usually better in crumble than pie. And of course the best results are obtained by cooking in an Arrr-ga. k-jo

I hate to spoil the party
But not all pirates came from the West Country, however most were ruthless knaves who murdered and raped their way around the world until they came up against the Royal Navy, who gave them very short shrift, except to dance from the yard arm.
Pirates still exist, ask the hundreds if not thousands of hostages they have in Somalia and the huge ransoms paid for the release of crews and ships. They don't talk like Devon men, but they're just as ruthless.
Oh by the way there were also female pirates, who seemed just as nasty as the men.
The Red Lady (Veronica) 1500–1534 1528 - 1534 English One of the most cunning pirates of the sixteenth century who never revealed her identity. She commonly disguised herself as a singer or an entertainer to be brought on ships and once the crew ever advance on her or leave her by herself she would take her disguise off having a top, pants and her weapons underneath. She would then immediately kill all aboard the ship and sail to sea. (From wiki)

So they weren't romantic characters nor are they now.

Well...
It's not entirely international. Here in Bath, Somerset, UK, I haven't heard a single person acknowledge it, and the day is due to conclude in about three hours.
I had actually forgotten about it myself until I saw your blog...

Oh, Listen to Drea More, We Should!
Unless we are sailing in the Eastern Indian Ocean, we'd be advised to watch out for modern day pirates! Especially if you own stock in or work at a company these pirates are interested in ravishing.
They might wait until your stock is down or drive it lower themselves; you will be very attractive if your company has lots of cash or an employee retirement fund. They will take over your company and mortgage it to the hilt(!) to pay the debt incurred buying all that stock. They'll take the cash (in ridiculous salaries and bonuses) and swap the pension plan for a 401K (or something like that.) They'll sell off the most profitable parts of your business, down size the rest and see if it can survive, much smaller, understaffed and with a massive debt.
They'll probably do other things to turn your company into money for them, but I'm not up on the corporate raider (pirate) thing.
Thanks, Drea!
Hugs and Bright Blessings,
Renee

Let's sea.. Pirates captured ships. Stole their booty, raped, took prisoners to be ransomed or impressed some as fellow scurvy seadogs.
The British Navy impressed most of their seadogs. Attacked foreign vessels, seized as escaped seamen anyone THEY believed was *an English subject* -- mainly whatever number of crew they were short -- and took merchantmen as prizes.
Hum except for a lot less rape and pillage I don't see a difference.
Sort of.
