Neat?

Well, it's certainly a rip roaring lively place ... but neat? What I like about it is that it's gloriously untidy with unexpected gems hidden behind the furniture in unexpected places - not neat at all. I once described our home as living in luxurious squalor. I wouldn't accuse BC of that but it's comfortably untidy.

I didn't do it all....

.... honestly, even with Bonzi's help I couldn't write that many in a day!

Only joking! Shouldn't it have been 16 aren't we a chapter short of Short Chapters? Mind you five thousand visits could have been me trying to post last night's version of EAFOAB!

Seriously, it shows you must be doing something right Erin, which we appreciate but don't say often enough. Thank you very much for all you and your team do to facillitate our enjoyment.

Growth

erin's picture

For the past four years, annual growth in traffic and story postings on BC has been on the order of 70%-110% per year. That's doubling or nearly so each year. The cost to run the site has been going up at about 50% to 70% per year and donations and earnings from book sales and advertisements are keeping pace so no worries. :) At least once a year, we've gotten one or more large donations that covered a month or more of costs, sometimes just as things were looking a bit bleak.

I ask for $500 a month in donations and count book sales revenues as donations. It actually costs a bit more than $500 a month for all that I do and spend money on but the google ads make up for that shortfall. For four months this year, I asked for $600 a month and spent $100 a month on advertising the site in various places. The effect of advertising seemed to be rather minor so I discontinued it.

I closed down one server in early December and plan to close down another soon then open another one, a bigger faster machine for a migration perhaps in March. I'm putting aside about $100 a month right now for the startup costs, this is coming out of the ad revenues.

I'll be closing down BC-Classic sometime in the next year, and BC-shoeboxen sometime after that as well as BC-original. There will be server room for other projects. :)

Hugs to all,
Erin
