Spambot

Breanna Ramsey's picture

Spam like this is usually, but not always, from automated spambots. It is very annoying, but there is an actual method to the madness. Whether out of curiosity or ignorance, people do click on the links in the spam, which generates hits for the site that sent the spambot and increases its visibility on search engines. The higher visibility means more people who are actually looking for these products get to the site, and they have a better chance of selling their product. It's all about money.

It's still very annoying, and not just for us. It increases the work load for administrators like Erin. The spammers are constantly evolving to get around site security, forcing admins to spend time and money to upgrade. I'm sure it will be taken care of as soon as Erin or Sephrena get a chance.

Well, this is more than a Spambot

As the spam came from a registered user. That user is who we are tracing. Thats not to say they havent tried to implant a bot on the server to run more. But we are checking it out now.

Maybe not

Breanna Ramsey's picture

Like I said this stuff is usually, but not always, spread by a bot. There are bot programs that can register as a user and even get through security measures like CAPTCHAs and email verification. They go so far as to use open proxies to send the spam, making it difficult if not impossible to trace the actual spammer.

One thing to note - when you see a spam message, for goodness sakes don't click on any of the links. Many times they will send you to sites that will try to infect your computer with malicious software. At the very best, clicking on the link accomplishes the exact thing the spammer is after - their site gets more hits which translates into more potential income for them.

Problem fixed

The user has been blocked and the postings deleted. If this happens again (and it prob ably will) please PM me here or on Stardust. I tend to check my own site a bit more frequently then I do here but I'll make an effort to check here more frequently too while Erin is busy.

BTW, I just spoke to her on the phone and her mom is doing okay after the surgery to replace/repair the broken hip. They're arranging for a care facility for her at the moment for her long-term needs.

ROFLMAOPIMP!!

Thank you for that, Laika!

You missed out mentioning that it's the favorite national meat of Hawaii, though. One of the most curious things I've ever heard about Spam, especially after having tasted it. But, then, they eat poi.

Lovely Spam

I used to love it as a child during and just post-war in the UK. It was a rare treat in those heavily rationed days. btw it's an amalgam of 2 words - 'spiced' and 'ham', which I guess everyone already knew.

As a vegetarian for the last 20 plus years I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole now, let alone eat it, but I still remember that long forgotten taste. Oddly enough, even though I remember the taste as pleasant, I have no desire to try it again. I'd probably be disappointed, anyway :)

Spamalot is in Quebec

erin's picture

According to Hormel, the name came out of a cocktail party where a Hormel executive offered a prize for the best name for the company's new product. Another executive suggested SPAM because it's made from pork shoulder and other cuts and tastes like ham, sort of. :) Shoulder Pork and hAM. There are no spices in the usual product unless salt is a spice. :)

Another meat company had been selling cured pork shoulder as ham (or ham roll) when the US government started enforcing the definition of ham as being cured pork butt. They needed a new name. Someone pointed out (possibly wrongly) that in Quebec, any cured pork can legally be called "bacon", at least in French, since that is the original definition of the word, more or less. :) Thus was born Canadian Bacon. They didn't trademark it so it became a generic name for cured pork shoulder in the US. I don't actually know what they call it in Canada, maybe back bacon. :) What's called "back bacon" in England and Ireland is also sometimes called Canadian bacon in the US, it's not from the shoulder though, it's from--the back!

American-style bacon is usually called "streaky bacon" in England and Ireland.

Buccaneers got their name from curing meats above a smoky fire on a frame called a "boucan" which may or may not be from an Tupi word for a cooking platform which is probably the origin of the word "barbecue" {par boucan} also. Nothing at all to do with bacon, ham or spam. :)

Etymological Erin :)

Cleaning My Computer

I keep a kosher computer. Getting spam isn't a geood thing because spam is part ham, something that can't be kosher. So off I go kashering my computer again. Damn!

Spam can be good, chopped up fine in eggs

Spam -- from Hormel in Minnesota -- kept some of my mom's cousins housed and clothed but that was the stuff in cans that is clearly not kosher. Salty and nice chopped up in eggs on a campout, if you are a hungry Boy Scout.

The electonic spam has me buying and updating antivirus, firewall, antispybot software and the like frequently and still a little gets in and I have dialup. I has to be worse for broadband. That's in adition to automatic *critical* updates to Microsoft productson my four-year-old Dell. I'll not be some creeps slave computer to line their pockets with silver.

Ham in Spam?

Damn!

I always thought it looked like clam,

Or some other gelatinous glop they could jam –

Into a can for a frantic m’am,

To serve to her ravenous fam

When they’d rather have lamb,

While listening to Wham! (UK)

With the babe in her pram;

A boy she named Pam,

So onto BC this rhyme we would ram.
