Some of you know, I'm a pastor as well as being a MtF in the process of transition. As part of being a pastor I regularly counsel people, many of whom are transgendered themselves. One, is a MtF trying to deal with what it means being trans. I chat with her on the phone every Thursday night. This last week I said something that immediately clicked with both of us. Both thought I should share it.
We know more about being a man than we want, and know less about being a woman than we need.

I used to work with an older gentleman years ago...
..."How are you?" I'd ask. His reply was, "I'm gettin' there." We're learning about ourselves everyday, I expect. To parallel what you all said, Hopefully, I'm finding I'm disliking that part of me that is male less and less every day while embracing and learning to treasure and adore and forgive the greater part of me that is female more and more! And learning even more so to be human along the way. Thank you for providing yet another reason why I love coming here; I'm never alone!

I'm not sure this is really necessarily true...
Personally, I never really knew anything about being a man, no matter how much I tried to pretend like it, none of it ever made any sense to me, ever.
Now, as I'm embracing Abigail, even though I still don't -KNOW- anything at all, from her perspective, things just make sense. Things I had to work so very very hard to try to get as Andrew are more or less just becoming natural - feminine natural.
I was an automaton while trying to be male, now I'm becoming a whole person for the first time in my life.
Though I do understand the feeling... It's scary how little I actually know about the role I'm trying to shift into, and while I didn't really know anything about being male either, being an automaton was easy, I knew how to do that very well.

I don't know if I completely agree with that, but I do understand the sentiment - at least from where I stand.
Yes, I do know more about how to make people believe I'm a guy. I know more about what guys say and do - when the girls aren't around. I can FAKE it most of the time... At least well enough that I was able to avoid problems with bullying and the like after fifth grade. What I don't know is what it really means to BE a man. Some of the things I learned to do - just don't make sense, but they seem to work. Heck, some of that may just be misunderstanding and it's not working as well as I thought.
But, on the second bit... I believe I understand what being a woman IS, but I don't know how to ACT like one... Reliably. I'm probably mistaken in my belief in the first part, and have been told that I do better on the second than I think, but that's where I am...
Thank you for sharing that. It's well worth thinking about, and I will think about it some more.
