Good on the girl scouts
for being partially inclusive... still no boys in the girlscouts, though there are girls in boyscouts... Bah
It's a good news outcome but
It's a good news outcome but I watched the imbeded 9news report and it really made me cringe. I couldn't believe the news item kicked off with the words "This is a subject that some of you may feel uncomfortable discussing". Really? I mean seriously do we want to making this a taboo subject that comes with a warning? Then the male presenter talked about the mother "encouraging this young man to dress and act like a girl". Grrr! And then the expert after starting out positively about juding people on a merit basis then goes on about not making the kid a target? It sounded to me like a soft version of 'man up kid and they won't pick on you'. How about we raise a generation that aren't prejudiced instead?
I'm pleased that Bobby will be a girl scout though. That does give me hope though I wonder how accepting the troop leadership will be after the earlier refusal.
"Just once I want my life to be like an 80's movie, preferably one with a really awesome musical number for no apparent reason. But no, no, John Hughes did not direct my life."
"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."
I thought the whole thing
was patronising, although the girl scouts did seem to be trying to become inclusive.
It still feels wrong at a fundamental level, that girls who want to do by things - good; boys who want to do girl things - bad. Why can't children just be children? Remember the word 'girl', used to refer to all children under the age of puberty and wasn't gender specific.

Patronising?
I was fighting the urge to shout "Oh **** off!" at the screen, particularly the make news presenter. That child was me, but I was never allowed to be like that. I had to 'man up', as they put it. Cue forty-odd years of nastiness.
I can remember the first time I wore a dress....
...red plaid...a secret between me and my sister. Life never allowed it to be....I see these reports in the paper or on TV or Youtube, and part of me wants to cry for what I lost. Now, for the first time, I can cry in celebration for what those like that little girl have found. Crying for happy beats the hell out of crying for grief, so I'll cry for her! But I cry for you and me and Alison and Roo and others here too, and that will never change, because it's part of what made us the women we are.
Dio vi benedica tutti

What a cute girl too.
Such pretty eyes, hair and face. He was not meant to have boy parts from what I can tell though, it is easier for kids that age to look androgynous, his/her entire demeanor, and actions were that of any girl her age, it could have been my own daughter at that age in the interview, they look similar. I hope the world accepts her as she truly wants to live and makes her happy, I had hoped her generation would have it easier but, reading a lot of the comments on the yahoo page at the bottom it seems we still have an awful long way to go, many miles my dears, many miles.
I know my own children are much more accepting of people like Bobby than those around myself when I was a scared, confused child. My 15y/o daughter especially who even knows a few kids in her school that have gender identity issues and she says that for the most part the other high school kids dont bother them, oh if only I could believe that were the case everywhere and all the time, but, I am not a Pollyanna as much as I want to be. Having gone through it since my own childhood, I know the pain it causes. Like many here we have the tear stained pillows to prove it.
Good luck Bobby!

Generational differences
Had any of us asked to be in the girls scouts when we were younger (baby boomers) we'd have been takednto a psychiatrist and then told its not right for a boy to want to be a girl.
My daughter is 23 her generation is very accepting of transgendered individuals and other things we (baby boomers) were taught or made to believe was taboo.
My daughter has been with me when I do public speaking at police trainings. One of the older officers asked how she felt about me being intersexed and presenting as female. She stepped up and told the officer she was very okay with it and that it was fine with her.
So Bobby wants to be a girl scout? What's the big deal? The media has a way of taking something trivial and making it a major issue.
I say Kudos to his mom for listening to him and giving him what makes him comfortable.
I've learned to let comments go. Unless one has been in my pumps and walked in them I don't let it bother me.
I think that Bobby is going to grow up as a strong woman and on her way to adulthood prove that little boys can be girls.

boy wants to be girl scout
I am open minded person I understand this boys like girl kind of things. If this
kid wants to join a girls sports team I would say sure come on kid but I have to stop and think about the girls in the troop. Are a bunch of little girls going to
feel so comfortable having a little boy at the girl scouts annal slumber party?
I mean they are 7 years old its not like they are 3 and won't notice. When they go to
the bathroom to change their clothes for bed and this kid comes in to go potty
is a 7 year old going to feel so comfortable if she putting on her shirt when he
comes in.I also wonder if this was girl wanting to be a boy scout would be so
open to this? If their wasn't a boy scouts which offers the same kind of thing
for boys I would say ok you have no other choice so go on kid. When I was a little
girl I know I always wanted to find a place where I could be a girl without boys
around and I am sure boys feel the same way.We don't have gender sex bathrooms I
don't believe we should have gender sex boy and girl scout troops.
true enough...
but girls are allowed in boy scout troops... fair is fair
After reading the comments by the Girls Scouts of Colorado
I am very pleased with the way this was handled by the council. It is about time, because the Boy Scouts of America have had girls in their troops for years now. It is about time the Girl Scouts reciprocated.
As far as being comfortable with a 7 year old boy in the bathroom while other girls are changing, makes no difference as I am sure the troop will be told about this and to treat her as any other girl. Like it says in the article, "...we don't require proof of gender."
This is another step forward for the transgender community and maybe when more young people her age comes out, people will stop all the hate and bigotry. But just wait now, because we haven't heard from the right wing religious zealots who oppose such change. The cauldron has been put on to boil, so let us see if it boils over.

SHE is a cutie!
7 year old boys don't express themselves like that. I just hope she can get her hormones sorted out in the near future, so she'll STAY cute...
