Before the new equipment, the nightly downtime at 1 am Pacific Time was around 33 minutes. It's apparently quicker now, since I've signed on successfully between 1:20 and 1:30. Does anyone know just when the site comes back up?

The original nightly backup/downtime process was a jumble of scripts, that ran at various scheduled times, with error margins built into the schedule.

One of my goals when we moved the servers was to shorten the backup process and we did this by streamlining it into a single script that runs all the necessary processes sequentially so it will literally come back "just as soon as it's finished". The process starts at 2AM MDT, and like I said, finishes once the last process runs.

We've also been able to get rid of the actual "nightly reboot" that used to happen, and have done away with some other processes that were in place to keep the old server "in check"...

We have a lot of plans to continue speeding up BigCloset, and some major overhauls to the Search System and other key systems that will REALLY make this place fly again.

P.S. You don't know how happy I am you noticed the downtime speed up. I had figured it would probably be one of those things that "no one really noticed".

You do realise...

That apart from the question "How long does it take?" there is nothing in what you have typed that I actually understand? Os gwelwch yn dda, siaradwch yng Nghymraeg...neu yn Saesneg :-)

Easy!

Think of it the way they do those commercials... they "consolidated all the individual maintenance tasks into one, easy mega-task!"

They only have one housekeeper, and didn't want to overtax them. In the old system, they had dusting scheduled from 2:00 to 2:10, vacuuming scheduled from 2:10 to 2:20, and washing the dishes scheduled from 2:20 to 2:30. Even if dusting only took three minutes, vacuuming didn't start until 2:10. Now, they have a calendar entry called Housekeeping at 2:00, the does dusting, vacuuming and dishes with no breaks between, and finishes sooner. Sadly, though, the housekeeper no longer gets a break between tasks. :)

Housekeeper Analogy

And that housekeeper was using those breaks to slip into Piper's closet and try on clothes? Bad, bad housekeeper. Now you work right through until you're done!

I understood every word :P

But then again, I do muck about with IT systems for a living (although not the 'back-end' stuff that Piper's been streamlining).

For me, it goes down at 9am, which is a useful indicator that it's probably a good idea to shut down and leave for work (I have to pay the broadband bill somehow! <grin>). Of course, because the US and UK switch back and forth from daylight savings time at different dates, there's a week or so when the downtime is 8am... strangely enough, I tend to get into work a bit earlier during those periods... can't imagine why... :D

I'm not usually up at 1am Pacific, but on those nights when I couldn't sleep I've noticed that the system is (was?) 'offline' from around 12:30am until after 3am.

Dayna.

Not really

The old routine was to go down at 12:59 AM PT and come back up at 1:35 AM PT. Other apparent outages might be related to slow proxies.

Now the site goes down at 1 AM PT and comes back up when it is finished, generally in fifteen minutes or less. If you do try to access the site during that window, you may need to clear your cache to reach the site after it comes back up. People using AOL and similar proxy-bound services can continue to have problems that have nothing to do with the site being up or not.

Hugs,
Erin

Nightly Downtime

For me, the site is down from 3-330.
