Sort of technical question. I'm pretty sure that it was somebody, or multiple somebodies, here who steered me to a couple of very handy Firefox add-ons: Dog Ears and Readability.
Dog Ears especially has proved very handy to me, since I do almost all reading through the web browser these days. However, it's author has left the realm and the last version of Firefox supported for the addon was 4.x.
Now the Mozilla folks have decided to change their latest version to be 6.x.x and thus my handiest addon is broken.
So my question, has anyone found a decent addon that lets one mark a particular point in a story like Dog Ears, but that is still compatible with newer versions of Firefox? Or with any other browser for that matter, since I've got most of the major players installed.

Possible workaround
Try the Add-on Compatibility Reporter extension - it allows you to use add-ons designed for previous versions of Firefox and send a report to AMO to notify the developer if it is indeed compatible (but hasn't had it's version information updated).
Alternatively (this one's for certified geeks only):
Download the xpi.
Rename the xpi extension to zip.
Open up the zipfile.
Find install.rdf.
Open it.
Find MaxVersion.
Change it to 6.0 (release) / 7.0 (beta) / 8.0 (aurora).
Save - Windows should update it in the zipfile.
Change the extension back to xpi.
Manually install the extension.
So unless you have multiple copies of Firefox (e.g. use it on lots of computers), installing the Compatibility Reporter is a far easier method :)

Another method . . .
Use the "Nightly Tester Tools" add-on to allow you use of add-ons and extensions no longer 'supported' by the current version.

I used the first option, but only because some confusion in the developer notes on Nightly Tester Tools indicated that compatibility forcing is removed in newer issues and the rest of the tool's features are beyond my needs. I'll also keep in mind the more detailed hack, just in case further issues arise.

I have had a problem with 6, 6.01, 6.02 crashing a lot.
7.0 seems to be stable, so did 4.12
Let me state somehow, I had 6.0x and 4.12 on my computer at the same time, and then when I upgrade to 7, the 4.12 was the only one that went to 7. however, 6.0x thinks its fully up to date.
Has anyone else have a problem with 6.0x being crashable?

... with Firefox 6.0.2 which is the version I'm using. I had to check to seer what my version is :) As far as I'm concerned it works faultlessly (perhaps I shouldn't have said that :) )
On the reading front, I usually download longer stories and read them using my ancient copy of Word 97. It even works on Win 7 even though every time I load it I'm told there is something missing :) I just note the page I've got to on page 1. OK it's crude but I can't be arsed to do anything more sophisticated. I've been playing with computers on and off since 1961 and I think most software changes are there because the programmers fancy doing a bit of coding. I've got bored and lazy :)

I do something even more low-rez.
I often grab stories, especially longer ones, to read offline. I copy and paste them from the browser into Editpad (like Notepad but better), and save them as a txt file. If I have to read them in two or more sessions, I'll just add in a line that says "bookmark" at the spot I stopped, and when I reload the file, I'll do a search for that, then delete it again. Or move it to the new spot if I still can't finish yet.

I had asked this question in the forum, dog ears wasn't mentioned. It sounds like what I was looking for.
I'm using the find function at the moment. Since I am still using Firefox 3.6 I may have to look it up. Thanks for the tip.
