So tell me dear friends,
What does a fifty + woman wear to a job interview?
The last time I went to a job interview was 24 years ago. Good heavens, that was a whole lifetime ago, I didn't know Penny was peeking out then, but she was. And just think, a week ago I got a piece of paper from a judge that says I'm legally Penny
So what's considered appropriate? I'm thinking something a bit on the conservative, mid calf, black pleated skirt, Rose blouse. Of course, I could go with a gray tweed skirt that comes to just below the knees, just a bit more risque but not by some standards.
Oh well, I think for now I'll put my sleepy blond head to bed (been up since 4:30 yesterday afternoon) and think about it later, like after my next overnight 12 hour shift.

Third, that being said, if you are looking for suggestions, it might help to know what kind of job, what industry, and the level of job (management) you are looking for. What's good for a manager would not be good for a line employee.

Good luck with the interview, mid calf will work, personally at 34 to interviews I would wear knee length, ankle length or slacks with a nice blouse and depending on the weather a fitted jacket that matched the skirt/slacks or was close. Shoes would be maximum 2" heals or flats. Coloring of clothing is too individual to advise on, I'm sure you know the colors that best suit you.

Name change + job
Congratuations Penny on your name change. Well that certainly will go down well (not) with some people (or person).
As for the interview I always dress smart. Depending on the job and what is expected a suit is usual (a skirt one now you have your name change). When I've interviewed people, I've always used how someone is dressed as a first impression. If they haven't made an effort for the interview, are they going to make an effort in their job? Someone not dressed smarlty to an interview has to work twice as hard in the interview to pursuade me that they can do the job.

A lot depends on what kind of job. (BTW- contrats on the Name change.)
If you're looking for a professional job - then a suit, is appropriate. If you're looking for a construction job? Not so fast... Folks here - in the industry you're applying can give you more accurate advice, if you can describe the kind of firm/position you're applying to.

For starters, congratulations on the name change!
If I were to go to an interview as Samantha, I would wear a skirt suit with a skirt that was no shorter than knee length and modest heels. (Probably three inch heels as anything shorter feels funny to me for some reason...) That's me, though.

Not sure when your interview is, or if you have enough time, but I would advise you to "case the joint" in advance. Go visit the premises if you can do so anonymously or can think of an excuse, or just mope around near it long enough to see what people are wearing. If you see a woman who looks like she would get the job you're interviewing for, wear what she's wearing.
Get your hair, nails and cosmetics professionally sorted in advance if you can. Make sure your makeup carries the right tones to work under daytime office lighting, and choose your accessories and jewelry carefully. You want tasteful and simple and not flashy.

Where I'm working now is for a very large cheese cheese company. They call my position Electronic Technician, I call it Automation Specialist because of all the things I do with industrial automation. The proposed job is about the same thing, they call it Maintenance PLC Programmer. The biggest change will be changing from making cheese to making steel buildings.

The interview is 8:00 am Thursday morning. I'll be working tonight from 6 pm to 6 am Wednesday morning. I get to sleep for a while before going back to work for 4 hours, 6 to 10 pm, (that's to cover a time gap because one electronic tech left 3 weeks ago). I'm planing on getting my nails done, except for the actual color (no nail polish at the cheese plant) Wednesday evening. I'll finish them off when I get home Wednesday night. Unfortunately, I wont have time to get my hair done. As for makeup, I should have practiced more. My problem is that there's no body here that can tell me if I've done a good job or a bad one. Oh well, cross your fingers and toes.

I am sure others will disagree, but this seems to be a job, where you will be on the plant for. I would guess, that there is a requirement of no dresses/skirts on the plant floor. Perhaps that points to the fact that a pants suit, rather then a skirt would give an idea of how you would appear on the job.

As part of the interview you will probably be given a tour of the facilities. If so, you'll need to wear something that, while looking smart and professional, is going to be able to withstand conditions down there. Sounds like a trouser suit would be a better fit.
