Fourth of July weekend! Yay!

Most of us probably just think of the long weekend, going out, maybe go on a trip, or watch the fireworks. And that's okay - I do, too.

I might not be the best poster child for patriotism, seeing as I haven't captured any beach heads, defended any fort, participated in any major national movement, or help rally people to initiate meaningful change.

And, although I am not as red-white-and-blue as others, and although I am proud of my family and my roots - deserving or not, I am also proud to be an American.

From the two of us to everyone - Happy Fourth of July weekend.

Various Artists: The Great American Melting Pot Lyrics
Lyrics & Music by: Lynn Ahrens
Performed by: Lori Lieberman
My grandmother came from Russia
A satchel on her knee,
My grandfather had his father's cap
He brought from Italy.
They'd heard about a country
Where life might let them win,
They paid the fare to America
And there they melted in.
Lovely Lady Liberty
With her book of recipes
And the finest one she's got
is the great American melting pot

My grandmother came from Russia
A satchel on her knee,
My grandfather had his father's cap
He brought from Italy.
They'd heard about a country
Where life might let them win,
They paid the fare to America
And there they melted in.
Lovely Lady Liberty
With her book of recipes
And the finest one she's got
is the great American melting pot
The great American melting pot.
America was founded by the English,
But also by the Germans, Dutch, and French.
The principle still sticks;
Our heritage is mixed.
So any kid could be the president.
You simply melt right in,
It doesn't matter what your skin,
It doesn't matter where you're from,
Or your religion, you jump right in
To the great American melting pot
The great American melting pot.
Ooh, what a stew, red, white, and blue.
America was the New World
And Europe was the Old.
America was the land of hope,

Or so the legend told.
On steamboats by the millions,
In search of honest pay,
Those nineteenth century immigrants sailed
To reach the U.S.A.
Lovely Lady Liberty
With her book of recipes
And the finest one she's got
Is the great American melting pot
The great American melting pot.
What good ingredients,
Liberty and immigrants.
They brought the country's customs,
Their language and their ways.
They filled the factories, tilled the soil,
Helped build the U.S.A.
Go on and ask your grandma,
Hear what she has to tell
HOW great to be American
And something else as well.
Lovely Lady Liberty
With her book of recipes
And the finest one she's got
IS the great American melting pot
The great American melting pot.
The great American melting pot.
The great American melting pot.

A few your song didn't mention

My ancestors lived in Africa
As they minded their own one day
they were thrown in chains
to toil in pain
in a country far away
we worked for whites
and fought for our rights
they resisted us all the way
but finally now we're citizens
of this place the USA
Lovely Lady Liberty

sometimes it takes a while
for her to smile
and decide you're not a disease

My grandad he was Chinese
from the Yangtze River's shore
He set out for America
As cheap railroad labor
He couldn't bring my grandma
They wouldn't let us breed
Some cowboys jumped his heathen ass
and on his head they peed
My family struggled for all we had
And faced much bigotry
But today I am a student
at a big name University
Lovely Lady Liberty
with her book of recipes
sometimes it takes a while
for her to smile
and decide you're not a disease

My people were natives of this soil
when the melting pot arrived
It found us inconvenient
and committed genocide
we have our reservations
but you can't fight city hall
what's done is done we have our fun
getting wrecked on alcohol
we find ourselves being idolized
in a peculiar sort of way
we hunt and fish but i just wish
they'd throw some jobs our way
Lovely Lady Liberty
with her book of recipes
sometimes it takes a while
for her to smile
and decide you're not a disease

Happy 4th All...

No fireworks for me

I go to parades and have a bar-b-cue and fly the flag to show my patriotism, infact I have the flag always up every day.
I avoid the fireworks due to PTSD and the noise is one of my triggers.
I celebrate all of those who gave their lives so I can celebrate Freedom. We have had many wars, skirmishes and polices actions overseas where American warriors gave their lives in defending our constitution and the American way of life.
We still send our warriors overseas to battles, so on this day think of the men who faced being punished for treason, yet stood their grounds and declared our nation free of the tyranny.

A very Happy 4TH of july to each and every one of you

Actually...

Actually, I'll be sitting home, alone, on the 4th. My family heads off tomorrow afternoon, and I'll see them again next weekend. Long distance logistics with competing needs causes this.

Perhaps I'll get some painting done (on the house... Got some rooms that need a fresh coat! Maybe I'll find some time to write? Sleep in? Ooooh. That sounds nice. :-)

Hope everyone (who has a holiday) enjoys their holiday. (And, for those for whom Monday's a "normal" day, may it be a day filled with happiness.)

Have fun, you two.
