Comments on that article

The comments make her out to be a cliquey, mean, vindictive gossip-monger... not so different from a large number of genetic teenage girls then :)

Strangely enough...

...all the negative comments are anonymous... <sarcasm> I wonder why... </sarcasm> :)

However, if Andrew was the backstabbing, self-centered bullying gossip-monger the negative comments portray her as, I doubt she would have garnered enough votes to win - let alone the "joke" votes mentioned by one antagonist.

So in reality, the antagonists are probably motivated by a combination of school politics and sour grapes because they (or their best friends) didn't win.

Almost full kudos to the parents (particularly dad) for supporting their/his daughter (and bottom marks for the anonymous colleague mentioned) - but a few marks lost for the apparent pronoun abuse... unless Andrew has decided she wants people to keep using her male name and male pronouns until her name change is official. As for the use of "Andii", I'd assume the nickname is reserved for close friends

I dunno...

Unless the parents have known/supported Andie (the name another paper said she preferred) for many years, they have a LOT of years of practice thinking they had a son to get over. (I use the same rule with my wife. She gets the pronoun "SHE" more often than not... It's when she's stressed/tired that the old one comes out... And, she's only known since Oct '08... And, we've been married for 30 years. A LOT of time to UNlearn.)

That her parents support her is far more important than lapses in pronouns (now). That the school supported her enough to vote her in. WOW.

The other article I mentioned also referenced a gay teen being elected queen - in Blacksburg, VA. Talk about a town with a rep of conservatism. (Jerry Fallwell's church is there!)

ALL teenagers are like that

No matter who had been the eventual winner, there would have been bitchiness and catcalling, so it just shows she fits perfectly into the world of teenage girls. The lack of any comments negative about her transgender status, instead focussing on her attitudes, is positive, even amongst all the negativity.

I agree entirely about the parents, I wish mine had been aware enough for me to be able to tell them, but they were distant, bigotted and thoroughly negative on the occasions they found my clothes stashes.

I suppose...

...Julia or Maria sound nice, but I suppose I wouldn't be disappointed with Andrea.
